VIP’s Around The World Share Their Zoom Call Drinks

By Editor In Chief, Nadja Atwal It’s usually the most wonderful time of the year, but 2020 we have to make  some effort to get into the right mood. It is a zoom-intense scenario … people do their virtual business calls, the virtual holiday parties, virtual dates and make plans for virtual New Years Eve events. In order to not feel Zoom-ed out, pairing your call with the right drink can make all the difference to the experience. We asked several VIPs from around the world about their favorite drinks for their Zoom calls and discovered some very interesting new drinks and familiar ones with a twist.  Current World Heavyweight Boxing Champion Mahmoud (Manuel)  Charr introduced our staff to something that I found to be both unique and delicious : Moloko   ”I am getting ready to defend my title early 2021, so I got to be really disciplined on the diet front” he tells us. ” Moloko is already a big hit in Europe. Very refreshing, with wonderful ingredients and low calories. It was invented by Dr. Gerd Müller a famous inventor in the health and lifestyle sector. So even before I tried it I suspected it must be good. And look, you can only drink so much water without being bored out of your mind. I can not have all the sugar that comes with all natural juices. So during training or during my virtual meetings, you’ll often catch me sipping a can of Moloko. It also can be mixed into all kinds of amazing cocktails. “Yes, we gotta admit that Moloko stuff gets along very well with Gin, Prosecco and especially Vodka! Of course us health focused Miami people especially appreciate that you can get it sugar free as well and that it has nothing artificial in it but lots of healthy and yummy ingredients. The Moloko Cranberry with those subtle cherry blossom and ginger notes is my personal favorite.  TV  star and skincare mogul Lea Black created her own drink “ It is actually called Leatini ! ” Now that  sounds like something sexy in a glass!  “You mix 3oz Gin with 1/4 Monk fruit juice. Pour ingredients into a mixing glass with ice cubes. Shake and then strain over ice. Serve it in a mug with some twisted lemon on top. I use my Ruth Bader Ginsburg mug as you see. “ Well, I tried it, I loved it and was ready for cat nap afterwards. Polish -American Supermodel Joanna Krupa loves a good latte or her Polish coffee extract from grains, called Inka! “But after hours I still like a nice glass of Prosecco to go with my friends and family zoom chats,” she tells us. We are with her!  Greetings from Paraguay. Their top TV star “Libres Para Elegir)” and finance wizard Carsten Pfau is practicing as he preaches: “During  the show it’s fresh pressed orange juice from my own fields for every guest and panelist on our show,“ he gushes. And after the show? “Then you can turn it into a delicious mimosa – but only with real  champagne of course! European star actress Alexandra Kamp is sending us greetings from Berlin with her favorite mug and a very intriguing recipe: An Italian hot coffee cocktail. Strega is a popular Italian digestif made from a proprietary blend of 70 herbs and spices. It is also not as “witch liqueur .”This goes very well with a nice cup of dark roasted coffee for that perfect Post dinner cup of coffee when you are skyping or zoom-calling with your loved ones or for a virtual girls night.  New York philanthropist Masha Pearl likes Martinis with the something of the something best “ Lychee or apple martinis are my choice of drink for Zoom cocktails.”  My own contribution is something familiar and something I view as pretty unique. I don’t have a sweet but rather a sour tooth  and as a result I enjoy lots of grapefruit juice. During my business calls, I mix it 50: 50 with sparkling water. Preferably Perrier. For my “virtual drinks” occasions or my upcoming  virtual Christmas dinner with my mother, I ll mix 1/4  grapefruit juice with  3/4 pinot Grigio wine. I simply came up with it out of the blue and then was surprised to see this one day this year as a ready mix in my wine store around the corner. I guess someone suddenly had the same idea and simply turned it into a business. I still prefer the self-made mix though and with lots of pulp in it for me, please. Try it! Cheers, Happy Hollidays and Happy New year! Yours, Nadja Atwal

The ART of Sydney Maubert

Sydney Maubert sports an impressive resume and is gifted with creative talent. She is a MArch II graduate student at Yale’s School of Architecture class of 2022. She just completed her BArch at the University of Miami’s five year program and is also the owner of Sydney R. Maubert LLC, art under which she’s completed two murals in Wynwood. She hopes to use her educational, professional and personal experiences, in practice and pedagogy to design equitable spaces for marginalized students and users.  How did you get involved in the world of art?   I got involved in art through my parents who really supported my interests in art by buying me all the paper, canvases and brushes as a kid. My Dad especially fostered my interest in art by giving me lessons through his own talent and the books he bought me. I think my skills were refined in architecture school at the University of Miami.    What art do you most identify with?   I’m not sure which genre I’d be in. I am a portrait artist, an Afro-latin artist. I use acrylic paint to convey personality and emotion, and it’s clear that I have an interest in identity and exploitation through my own lens and identity. It’s an expression of myself more than mimicking a particular style or person. I have a loose classical background from architecture school but my style is constantly changing as a result of me being self taught. I mostly look at people I know for inspiration, mainly writers and professors, like Cornel West or Angela Davis.    Professionally, what’s your goal?  I want to be an architect, an educator and an artist. In all my work, whatever artistic media, I have always been fascinated by humanity’s changing forms. I hope that I can use the education and opportunities I receive to open doors for other students, and potentially remain a student for the rest of my life. It’s why I invested in additional education at Yale. I’d love to see myself as dean of one of my alums one day. I hope my art continues to be shown in public venues. I’m trying to create a legacy for my students and children.  Your mural at Syndicate Kava Bar… Why did you create this particular art media?  I really enjoyed this mural project because I enjoy painting at larger scales. It allows me to play with form, color and lighting more playfully than the challenge of a smaller surface. Given that it was my second mural with them, I began to grow my confidence and have kind of a first taste of being public. I do sell paintings to friends or anyone who finds me online, but I haven’t been publicly shown in the way that an outdoor mural warrants. Murals are my favorite and I hope to do more. As for the three music artists represented, the owner really loves music, and I tried to accommodate both of our music genres.  How does your art stand out from other art from today?   I think that the wonderful thing about artistic expression is that it captures the intangible in a comprehensible way. Even though two people might look at my paintings or designs and notice different things, they might interpret my soul or the subject’s humanity in a way that sometimes the banality of life doesn’t allow. It allows suffering to speak in a beautiful way. I don’t know if that translates in a simple portrait but it’s what I feel especially when my paintings are more charged, more of a conversation piece.    What do you love about Miami’s art scene?    I love Miami for its culture, honesty, charm and vulnerabilities. I didn’t really feel like an artist until I started to notice Miami in its full richness, its culture, wealth and poverty, the beautiful and the inequitable. I visit Wynwood a lot to learn from what other artists are doing or saying. Being Cuban and Haitian, I’ve always had a deep appreciation for the food, music, art, architecture, the vibrance of the Caribbean, and its people. I have a deep love for people, but especially my heritage, so Miami allowed me to relish in both cultures. A lot of my curiosity and passion revolves around people, art, architecture and education which all revolve around capturing and analyzing the human mind, body and spirit.  To learn more about Sydney and her work, visit her website at www.sydneyrmaubert.com Follow Sidney on Instagram @sydneymaubertarc

A 7 Million Dollar Bag To Save The Oceans

The Italian brand Boarini Milanesi is launching a 6 million euro bag (approximately 7 million US Dollars), the most expensive ever in the world. It has been created to raise awareness on the need to protect our seas, which are becoming even more threatened than usual by non-biodegradable plastics due to the Covid-19 pandemic. 800 thousand euros (approximately 950 thousand US Dollars) of the proceeds will be donated to cleaning the seas. The brand has decided to create this bag for a very precise reason, linked to the personal story of one of the brand’s two founders and designers, Matteo Rodolfo Milanesi. Matteo Rodolfo, who lost his father when he was just a teenager, has lots of memories of him linked to the sea. “We used to spend every summer at sea, between Greece and Turkey, and I was happiest when we would go on boat trips between the islands” says Matteo Rodolfo. “Even though mass tourism was still a long way off, we would often see plastic bags floating on the water or patches of tar leaked by oil tankers”. “Recently, I have seen even more plastic in the sea than when I was a child, due to the pandemic and all the gloves and face masks that are being carelessly thrown away. This reminded me of my father, who used to dive into the water to collect the plastic bags and bottles floating in the sea and help me wipe the patches of tar that I found on the beach when I was building sand castles off my hands”. This is why, together with Carolina Boarini, co-founder and designer of the brand, he decided to do something to help raise people’s awareness of the need to respect the environment, dedicating this particular bag to his father, who cared so much about the crystal clear waters of the seas and oceans. The project also includes a practical initiative for cleaning the seas: Boarini Milanesi undertakes to donate 800 thousand euros of the proceeds (approximately 950 thousand US Dollars) to cleaning and operations in defense of the marine environment. There are only three of these bags in the world. It is a Parva Mea model, made of semi-shiny alligator, adorned with a diamond pavé accessory and 10 white gold butterflies with sapphires, diamonds and Paraiba tourmalines, for a total of over 130 carats, over 1000 hours of work and a price of 6 million euros (approximately 7 million US Dollars). The choice of the stones is linked to seawater: Carolina Boarini tells us “Blue sapphires represent the depths of the oceans, Paraiba tourmaline reminds us of the uncontaminated Caribbean seas and diamonds refer to the transparency of water when it falls in the form of rain”.   —-

Miami Native Serves aboard USS Ronald Reagan in the Indo-Pacific Region

Miami native and Miami Norland Senior High School graduate Victor Mala is serving aboard USS Ronald Reagan (CVN 76), which is continuing to conduct operations in the Indo-Pacific region. Mala is an aviation boatswain’s mate (handling) airman apprentice, and is responsible for all preparations and movements of all aircraft on the flight deck. “It means a lot to be a part of the operation because I know back home there are people that are proud of me for doing something most people wouldn’t dare to do,” said Mala. Since the ship’s Yokosuka departure in June 2020, the Ronald Reagan continues to operate in the Indo-Pacific alongside allies and partners to demonstrate the United States of America’s commitment to defense agreements, as well as provide security and stability in support of a free and open Indo-Pacific region. In early July 2020, USS Nimitz (CVN 68) and USS Ronald Reagan Carrier Strike Groups started conducting dual carrier operations in the Philippine Sea and South China Sea. These carrier strike groups incorporate the capabilities of embarked fixed and rotary wing aircraft, Aegis guided-missile cruisers and destroyers, and attack submarines. This opportunity for two carrier strike groups to train and operate together in the region provides combatant commanders with significant operational flexibility and capabilities that only the U.S. Navy can bring. Most recently, Ronald Reagan completed a trilateral naval exercise with the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF) and Australian Defense Force (ADF). Australia and Japan have both fostered long-standing alliances with the United States. This year also marks the 60th anniversary of the treaty of mutual cooperation and security between the United States and Japan. The Ronald Reagan Carrier Strike Group is the Navy’s only forward-deployed strike group and one of America’s most visible symbols of resolve. The Ronald Reagan CSG, consists of Carrier Air Wing 5, the Ticonderoga-class guided-missile cruiser USS Antietam (CG 54), and Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS Mustin (DDG 89). Azimut Yachts With Gabriele Muccino To Tell The Story Of The New Magellano 25 Metri

An outstanding film director for a totally unconventional yacht: Gabriele Muccino will direct a short film to celebrate the launch of the new model in the Magellano Collection, with interiors by architect and designer Vincenzo De Cotiis. On the one hand a brand that symbolizes international excellence in yachting, on the other a multiple award-winning film director whose fame has spread as far afield as Hollywood: Azimut Yachts chooses Gabriele Muccino to tell the story of the yard’s new Magellano 25 Metri yacht, which will make its world debut next September 2020. To speak about such an out of the ordinary yacht, that presents exterior lines by the well known designer Ken Freivokh, the brand has identified a new language, the short movie, which is an unprecedented choice for the yachting industry. The shipyard, for which ‘Made in Italy’ style and elegance are central to its business culture, has commissioned Gabriele Muccino to make a short film for the launch of its latest original project, recognizing a ‘like spirit’ in this director renowned the world over for his talent (which has won him a remarkable four David di Donatello awards and is renown for his Hollywood movies starring Will Smith). The short will be shown for the first time next September in the grounds of the Maeght Foundation in Saint-Paul-de-Vence in Provence, at a gala evening organized by Azimut Yachts for the exclusive premiere of Magellano 25 Metri. With great poetry, the short film will describe the infinite nuances that unite art and emotion, engaging in an almost magical way with the Magellano, which in the narrative becomes a perfect synthesis of rigor and inspiration, discipline and creativity, reason and sentiment.

Latest trends in Plastic Surgery and Skin Care explained by Dr. Jhonny Salomon

By Karen Huggins Miami is famous for its beautiful people as well as its beautiful beaches, but it is also a popular destination for medical tourism and plastic surgery. Firm skin and a youthful appearance are something a lot of us take for granted in our twenties because we feel like we will look this good for years. We all age eventually, it’s a natural process that no one can escape. The eyes are one of the first things people see when they look at someone. No one wants their eyes to look tired or droopy. Depending on factors such as genetics, sun damage, diet, skincare, and smoking, the eyes can be one of the first places to show signs of aging. My mom has beautiful skin and always told me to drink plenty of water, apply sunscreen daily, eat a diet rich in antioxidants, and use quality skincare products. Hoping to delay the visible signs of aging in my 30’s it is time to do a little bit more for this area of my body. I wanted to share with you the latest techniques for skin care (especially eyes) and plastic surgery, so I decided to visit Dr. Jhonny Salomon, an eminent and one of the best Plastic Surgeons in Miami. His love for the arts made him a talented musician, painter and photographer, and his intelligence, a leader in his field: Plastic Surgery. The Plastic Surgeon is similar to an artist, aiming for the finest results using a palette of the latest, most advanced medical and surgical techniques. Cosmetic Surgery isn’t always a straightforward procedure, but rather a cultivation of various fine adjustments, similar to the creation of art. It is for this reason, that Dr. Jhonny Salomon approaches each surgical procedure with love and a deep artistic point of view. Dr. Jhonny Salomon’s work has been recognized and published in famous magazines and newspapers around the world: Vogue, Vanidades, Haute Living, Ocean Drive among others. Dr. Jhonny Salomon’s Plastic Surgery office is located in Miami, Florida. The center includes an outstanding Medical Spa handling non-surgical procedures including Botox and Restylane injections, medical peels, laser hair removal, and tattoo removal, among several other treatments. It is my second year doing the under-eyelid procedure with Dr. Jhonny and I loved it! My dark circles disappeared and my skin under the eyelid improved in an amazing way. KH – Dr. Jhonny, could you describe the latest trends in Plastic Surgery and other Procedures? JS – Recently and for 2020 the trend is being more natural. In Plastic Surgery many patients that had their breast implants in the 90’s wants to reduce them or remove them. More natural results with techniques removing the fat and then using the fat to rebuild other parts of the body. The other trend is with BBL for more natural results and body contouring. When the fat is removed, there is a new trend to reuse it to build up the chest (for man), for the chin/jawline and cheeks (for woman). People are looking for more natural results in plastic surgery and custom made procedures. Trends not being performed: texture implants, now smoother implants. People are looking for custom procedures and not overall procedures, we don’t want to have the same nose as others. KH – Are you offering new permanent procedures? JS – Fillers are lasting longer (one and a half years or almost 2 years for some of them).  With the Fat Grafting procedure, using your own fat can be used as a permanent filler for other areas such as cheeks and chin. For small amounts of Fat Grafting you don’t need general anesthesia, it is done under local anesthesia. In the U.S. we don’t have permanent fillers approved by the FDA. We also have other procedures at the spa: anti cellulite, weight loss, muscle building, laser for the skin, skin pen, full facial department (HydraFacial, facial peels). Dr. Jhonny Salomon created his own skin care line that can be incorporated into your wellness and maintenance regime. Follow Karen Huggins on Instagram @KarenHuggins_blog

GETTING AWAY DURING THE PANDEMIC

By Nadja Atwal In for the long haul or just a quick trip? Here is how to prepare … I guess we can already predict the words of the year for 2020: “Corona” and “Lockdown” will be in the top 5 for sure, no matter what happens next. Are you counting down the days until you fly to somewhere near or far (wherever they let you in without quarantine) or take that train to “anywhere but home”? Of course we love our own city, but too much of a good thing is also in the “too much “ category. While booking our trips most of us experience that new mix of positive excitement and volatile fear of the unknown. As a result we roam the net in search of gadgets and tools to keep us safer (from the virus). “People are looking very much for things like the perfect mask and sanitizers and that is all useful, but strengthening your immune system is also a vital key to staying healthy,” says medical doctor Stefanie Seyda who has been researching and working on immune supporting formulas. If you read about beneficial supplements on that front, Vitamin C and Zinc have been touted as must haves and must takes . Am I overlooking something? “ Indeed,” says Seyda “Vitamin D, folate and vitamin A and vitamin B6 and B12 have shown clear immune boosting effects in recent studies.” If you are looking for that new discovery that is being (rightfully)  hyped as a great inner shield against the virus, Seyda refers to the recent studies on resveratrol. Yes, that resveratrol that has been already touted as a great anti-aging agent which is being found in grapes and even red wine? “ Yes,” says Seyda, “but please, don’t let this knowledge lead you to the next wine bar now or fill your cellar with red wine. Alcohol intake is lowering your immune response. So stick to a good supplement for real benefits of Resveratrol”. Now as for new must have travel items: if you book a flight or train ride, you think about face masks. Especially for longer flights make sure it is not just protecting you but very breathable, as you may face many hours of wearing it. For a reusable option with a Vogue-ish fashion statement, check out En Avance, the multi-brand concept store showcasing global designers came to the Miami Design District in 2006 and has taken it by storm. Also remember that the virus can enter through the eyes and sadly too often does in places that many people share. So no matter what mask you choose, it should be worn with either a face shield or protective glasses that also protect the corner of your eyes – no just the front. For ladies the My Face Shield by Miami based fashion label Touchdolls is a great option and has a more colorful version for kids. When you board a plane, have the sanitizing wipes ready to give your arm rests and the tray ! A good disinfecting wipe down, unless you carry a tray cover like Airplane Pockets (which won the NTA ’s ” best travel accessory of the year award” 2019) A must have is a disposable seat cover like the disposable ones from Seet Cuvers are a steady companion in frequent flyer travel bags now. If you’d rather choose a reusable product, opt for the washable (and truly gorgeous) ones by NiceSeats Wherever this summer will take you, staying healthy and happy requires: staying safe.

On the Rise and Never on the Fence : Cathy Areu

Interviewed by Nadja Atwal Cathy Areu is one of those people you must like ….even when you disagree with her. She carries herself well with that witty intellect and sassy charm. The daughter of Cuban immigrants grew up in Miami, graduated with honors from Miami Killian High School got her B.A. degree from Florida State University in Tallahassee, FL and received an M.S. in English Education from Nova Southeastern University in Ft. Lauderdale. No wonder she landed that gig as a contributing editor for the Washington Post Magazine. The vibrant go-getter is also the founder of CATALINA magazine a top read magazine catering to the Latin demographic. It is also worth noting that she is one of PressReader’s international publishers. She has become a famous liberal commentator on TV – debating even the strongest conservative voices – including Sean Hannity. But as we mentioned, even when one disagrees with her, one can’t help but to like her, as she is okay, if you don’t see things her way. She simply wants to open your eyes to another point of view. On top of that, few Corona experiences were as highly publicized as hers (more in our interview, but we can already reveal, it was no picnic for Cathy). Now she is planning a whole new move: juggling wolves and swimming with sharks – aka…? Just read on. We spoke with her exclusively amid the post-Covid-19 opening of Miami.  You wear many hats. We see you as a passionate liberal political commentator on TV, then you also run a magazine. Tell us about your work.  I’m like most people in the media industry these days. I have to appear on more than one media platform to get my message heard. I started as a staff writer for my college newspaper, The Florida Flambeau, at Florida State University. And, eventually, like most print journalists, I went on to discuss my writing on national cable news channels. In the middle of it all, I made a life-changing decision, sold my car and moved to New York to create a company (catalina) and become an advocate for Latinas in the United States (my own demographic). I wanted to break stereotypes, and I have had to wear many hats to do it. You were to my knowledge the first prominent Floridian face of Corona. A sentence that stuck out to me was when you said “the virus finds your weakness” which is so individual. Tell us more about that and about your experience.   When the pandemic started, I was in South Florida in quarantine with my family, but I was still working. So when COVID 19 hit me, it hit me hard. I was sitting in front of bright stab lights when a painful migraine came out of nowhere. This was followed by the worst five days of my life! Even though my condition was considered mild to moderate, I experienced the worst headaches; my vision turned blurry for days; I couldn’t taste; my throat was sore; and I had chills and stomach and body aches. … All these symptoms are something I’ve experienced before at one point or another in the past, but not as painful and relentless. It’s like Covid gathered up all these weaknesses and threw them on me all at once.  I wasn’t sure if I contracted COVID-19 because, at the time, the only three symptoms listed were fever, cough and shortness of breath — and I experienced none of those! But my doctor here in South Florida broke the news: I was infected with coronavirus. Many weeks later, the CDC finally added some of the symptoms I had to their site, and it looks like the media continues to add new symptoms and findings everyday.  I believe my doctor here in Florida was the first to call it, “My Corona,” and I was the first one to consciously feel and say that coronavirus attacked me in a personal way. It zoned in on my worst weaknesses: migraines and headaches (non stop for 5 straight days). You have asthma but the virus seemed to ignore that…..? Weird, right? This asthmatic didn’t experience shortness of breath until day 5. That’s when my asthma started to bother me a little bit. I panicked  But, It turned out to be the final day of all my symptoms. I was finally able to go outside again for a run a few days after that. So refreshing. You have two daughters who also went through the virus – how have you communicated the whole Corona crises to them and how have they been dealing with it? I’ve been completely honest and transparent with them about it.  They know the media industry, and we talk about news every day. The coronavirus  was just another news topic, and they trusted me with the whole thing. They adjusted to quarantine quicker than I did, so there wasn’t a crisis in the house — it was more of an adjustment period of like three days. Like, creating a solid schedule for both of them and me really made everything about quarantine hassle-free.  But the kids didn’t understand the importance of my self-isolation, so they busted through my bedroom door and wanted to give me a hug and a kiss on the cheek to “help me feel better” … so yeah, they got the virus too. Both of them were ill at the same time, with a quick fever, but otherwise, they had different symptoms from me and each other. They may not be indestructible or made of rubber, but my two girls did feel a lot better in just two days. You are in NY and Miami and said you got the virus in Miami. How did it happen? I have offices in South Florida and New York City, so I’m back and forth all the time. I was in Miami when my symptoms started though. But I’ve heard symptoms can appear up to 14 days after being exposed. So, first
