A woman goes to the doctor with pain and is told it’s stress. Another reports fatigue and is told she’s simply overwhelmed. A woman in menopause struggles with insomnia, anxiety, brain fog, and joint pain, only to be told that it’s a normal part of aging and something she must learn to live with. While medicine has made tremendous advances, many women still leave healthcare appointments feeling unheard, dismissed, or misunderstood. These experiences have contributed to a growing loss of trust in the healthcare system among women who feel their concerns are too often minimized rather than investigated. This feeling did not appear overnight. It has been shaped by decades of experiences, historical gaps in medical research, and ongoing concerns about how women’s health is valued. For many years, women were underrepresented in clinical research. Although women were not entirely excluded from medical studies, they were frequently left out of major clinical trials. As a result, medical knowledge was often based primarily on male participants. It was not until the 1990s that significant efforts were made to ensure women were more consistently included in federally funded research. Compassion Matters Another issue that is rarely discussed is something that cannot be measured by insurance reimbursements, research funding, or medical outcomes: compassion. One experience that has stayed with me forever was walking into a women’s diagnostic center for a routine mammogram. It was supposed to be a preventative screening, something women are encouraged to do to protect their health. Yet the moment I entered the waiting room, I felt something I have never forgotten. The room was small and cold. Women of all ages sat quietly in thin robes, waiting to be called. Some looked anxious. Others stared at the floor. No one knew what news might be waiting for them. For some, it was simply a routine screening. For others, it could have been the beginning of a battle they never expected to face. The air felt heavy. There was a shared sense of fear, uncertainty, and vulnerability that seemed to fill the room. As women, we are constantly reminded of the importance of preventative care. We are told to schedule our mammograms, undergo screenings, and stay on top of our health. But very little attention is given to the emotional reality of those experiences. Walking into a breast imaging center can be one of the most frightening moments in a woman’s life. What affected me most was not the procedure itself, but how I was treated during it. A mammogram is already uncomfortable. Women are asked to position themselves in awkward ways while a sensitive part of their body is compressed between metal plates. It requires trust, patience, and clear communication. Yet instead of feeling cared for, I felt rushed. When I struggled to position myself correctly, the response felt impatient and mechanical rather than understanding. I walked away feeling less like a person and more like a number. And that left me asking a question that I believe many women ask after experiences like these: What happened to compassion? Compassion in Practice Healthcare professionals often work under tremendous pressure, and many provide exceptional care every day. But patients are not simply appointments on a schedule. They are human beings experiencing fear, uncertainty, pain, and vulnerability. In those moments, kindness matters. Patience matters. Empathy matters. Technology and medical expertise save lives, but humanity matters too. For many women, the erosion of trust in healthcare is not always caused by a diagnosis or a treatment decision. Sometimes it comes from feeling invisible during some of the most vulnerable moments of their lives. A healthcare system can be technologically advanced and scientifically sophisticated, but if patients leave feeling dehumanized, then something essential has been lost. Compassion should never be viewed as an extra. It should be considered one of the foundations of healthcare itself. Menopause and Ongoing Gaps in Care Beyond reimbursement and research disparities, many women also report feeling overlooked during menopause. For years, symptoms such as hot flashes, insomnia, anxiety, depression, brain fog, joint pain, and fatigue were often dismissed as simply part of aging. Fortunately, research surrounding menopause has expanded considerably in recent years, giving women and healthcare providers a better understanding of hormone therapy, symptom management, and long-term health risks. While menopause is a natural biological transition, that does not mean women should be expected to suffer through debilitating symptoms without support or treatment. Even so, many women continue to describe feeling dismissed when seeking care for symptoms that can significantly affect their quality of life. As awareness continues to grow, so does the opportunity for healthcare providers to better recognize menopause as an important stage of women’s health deserving of thoughtful, evidence-based care. Beyond Healthcare The conversation about women’s healthcare extends far beyond doctor’s offices and hospitals. Feeling unheard is something many women describe experiencing in workplaces, schools, leadership positions, and even within their own communities. When women’s concerns are dismissed, interrupted, or minimized repeatedly, the impact reaches far beyond a single appointment. It shapes confidence, trust, and the willingness to seek help in the future. Improving healthcare therefore requires more than new technology or medical breakthroughs. It requires a culture that values listening as much as diagnosing and recognizes that every patient deserves to feel respected, informed, and understood. Creating that culture begins with small moments of compassion—moments when healthcare professionals slow down, ask thoughtful questions, and genuinely hear the people sitting across from them. For many women, those moments can be just as healing as the treatments themselves. “Compassion should never be viewed as an extra.
