Tonino Baliardo on the Enduring Spirit of the Gipsy Kings The Gipsy Kings founder reflects on music, family, tradition, Historia, and the generations carrying the sound forward. By Imani Ogden | Published by Angie LaGuardia | August 2026 Few musical groups have created a sound as instantly recognizable as the Gipsy Kings. Rooted in flamenco and rumba yet embraced by audiences around the world, their music has crossed cultures, languages, and generations—with Tonino Baliardo at the heart of that journey. Ahead of the Gipsy Kings’ Miami performance and with new music from Historia, Baliardo spoke with Miami SHOOT about the enduring connection between music and memory, preserving Gipsy traditions while moving forward, working alongside the next generation of his family, and what more than 40 years on the road have taught him about a life in music. Q: After more than four decades of performing around the world, what still excites you about getting on stage and playing Gipsy Kings music for an audience? Performing live for me is still a really exciting event. All the Gipsy Kings get together about fifteen minutes before show time, hanging out backstage, checking our guitars and hoping our in-ear pieces are all working. On the odd occasion there may be a problem, our road managers are there and will make everything right; no panic. As I walk on stage, I am thrilled and just want to start the set. I welcome our wonderful audience to our Gipsy Kings Fiesta. Q: You’re bringing the Historia tour to Miami on August 15. What can Miami audiences expect from this show, and how does this tour feel different from previous Gipsy Kings tours? I love being on the road, and especially America; it’s so vast, and every city, I think, has its own cultures. Miami is usually always warm, and as I live in Montpellier in the South of France near Marseille, I prefer a warm climate. We will be playing a few new tracks from Historia and, of course, all the favourites. During the day of our show, we work out our set list. I enjoy doing this because we have a great choice of songs. What I never know is what and where these young Gipsy Kings will do on stage. Every performance is different but always great fun. Q: The Gipsy Kings have connected with audiences across generations and language barriers. Why do you think songs like “Bamboléo,” “Djobi Djoba,” and “Volare” continue to resonate with people today? Yes, we now have different family generations coming to the shows and buying our albums and streaming them. In my opinion, nothing gets into the human soul more than music; maybe it is one of life’s mysteries. Every song, I think, evokes a memory, happy or sad, in all of us. Whatever the language. “In my opinion, nothing gets into the human soul more than music; maybe it is one of life’s mysteries.” Q: With Historia, you’re introducing new music while staying true to the sound that made the Gipsy Kings internationally famous. How do you balance honoring your musical roots with continuing to evolve as an artist? My Gipsy culture is, of course, very important to me. But we all have to move forward but keep the tradition and essence in new work. Regarding Historia, it was an idea I had many years ago. I am fortunate to have a recording studio in my home. My two sons, Cosso and Mikael, play on stage with me, and they worked in the studio with me. After some tracks were recorded, the other young Gipsy Kings came in to help and play on the tracks. It was a wonderful time working and recording with the young of Gipsy Kings. Q: Your new song “Caballero” carries that unmistakable Gipsy Kings energy. What inspired the song, and what does it represent about where you are creatively today? “Caballero” is, of course, a Spanish word, and it could mean a true honourable gentleman. Maybe my Caballero is the true gentleman and is a mystery with another side who likes excitement! It’s for you to decide. Q: The documentary follows your journey from performing on the beaches of Saint-Tropez to leading one of the world’s most celebrated musical groups. Looking back at that journey, is there a particular moment when you realized the music had become something much bigger than you imagined? I and my family are very pleased with the documentary on Amazon Prime. The crew followed us around for over a year. Filming in my home, interviewing our audiences, concerts and also our performance at Glastonbury. Never in my wildest dreams as a kid busking on streets in the South of France and also on the beaches there, including St. Tropez, did I think I would be blessed with my wonderful life. Q: The Gipsy Kings’ music has introduced flamenco and rumba to millions of people around the world. What does it mean to you personally to have played such an important role in bringing your culture and musical traditions to international audiences? Going back to my early days, playing flamenco, rumba, etc. was just a natural way for me, as it is part of my Gipsy culture. It has progressed over the years and the label World Music was used. Which is very important to me, as it will open doors across the World for people to listen and enjoy. Q: You’ve performed in so many different countries and for audiences with very different cultures. Is there something special about performing in Miami and connecting with the South Florida audience? To everyone coming to the Miami concert, we welcome you with much love to our GIPSY KINGS FIESTA. “We all have to move forward but keep the tradition and essence in new work.” Q: After 40-plus years, Grammy recognition, more than 20 million albums sold, and countless performances, what do you feel is the biggest lesson your career has taught you about longevity in music? It’s how I connect with people—even if we don’t speak the same language, the rhythm always finds a way.” — DJ Mario Clavasquin GROWTH & CREATIVE PROCESS For DJ Mario Clavasquin, the journey has been one of intentional evolution. “I used to think it was all about playing what people wanted to hear,” he shares, “but over time, I realized the power of curating an experience.” Mario now spends countless hours digging through tracks, producing his own music, and blending Latin percussion with deep house and electronic textures. “Every time I play, I want it to feel like a spiritual experience — like you’re not just dancing, you’re feeling something.” His process is guided by both discipline and heart — a dedication to the craft that’s as technical as it is emotional. Tyla Durden is taking the post modern music scene by storm. After MTV Europe started to air her video “SexLoveMusicFashion”, Tyla Durden became an instant sensation. Her new Album TH3 OR1G1N4L is hyped as a masterpiece and her talents are validated in many arenas: she is a highly published photographer with top ad campaigns under her belt, a praised stylist, director, writer, musician and simply a woman with great vision. Almost the minute the Swiss beauty dropped her new post-modern Album, she got the attention of the US music scene, hence Tyla living a jetset life now between two continents working on her first US tour and several high profile collaborations. We were so happy to learn that Miami was her place of inspiration and wanted to find out more. When in Miami you  may catch me at…. …the beach or in an art gallery. For example at Daniela Wicki’s Gallery Second Avenue in Wynwood. She’s Swiss Origin as well and I admire her art and influence. Or you may catch me of course at Art Basel… This Art fair has its roots as well in switzerland. You see, Switzerland and miami have a wonderful marriage in some case. The biggest misconception about Miami is… …that Miami is just about having a party. It’s much more than that. For me this place means a lot of inspiring emotions. When i first visit Miami in 2008 I had this warm, pure wanderlust feeling inside of me. Knowing I can reach everything. This creative, openminded and cool place is fullfilled with great ideas and innovative people. The last restaurant I enjoyed in Miami was…. …at the Otentic Fresh Food Restaurant, Washington Ave. Fresh food, a cozy atmosphere and I must confess – a little European flair – there I feel most comfortable. Portions are also for small European-bellies, like mine and the desserts are divine. You feel like God in France. What surprised me about Miami was… …that Miami Beach has the worlds largest Art Deco architecture collection. I always knew there are a lot of beautiful buildings along the beach, but I was surprised how many nice Art Deco photo subjects I would find there. Miami with it’s over 800 Art Deco Buildings represents art, architecture and culture. For me as a Photographer and Filmmaker is this pure inspiration. It’s not surprising that so many movies and songs are about Miami. Best reason to return to Miami aside from the weather? Miami is riding a wave of technology and optimism that brings smart and risk-taking heads from other cities and country’s to dare a new business. For example, I heard they would like to make a new Silicon Valley. I am very interested in technology, science, art and music. As head of a private company, I know how much courage it takes to create something. Risk tolerance, courage and a good idea are just the beginning. Lots of patience and determination are the prerequisites. I know Miami is a place where such forward ideas are allowed to grow. This is a great reason to come here again and again, to see what’s new. First time I became really curious about Miami was …? Sometime around 2001 I just finished my Art School in Switzerland and started my education as an Advertising Photographer. I started dreaming of Miami – because my Photographer Idol Helmut Newton made stunning pictures there at the beach which exerted a huge influence on me and my art to this day. Then I heard that the Art Basel takes place in Miami now, I also remembered the movies Bad Boys, Scarface, Donnie Brasco and that’s when I knew I had to go there. What happens in Miami stays in Miami…and  our magazine. Any  secret  or funny moment you ‘d like to share about you and this city? My funny moment: When I woke up after my first Night in a hotel at Miami Beach on Ocean Drive, I checked out if there is some hidden money behind my ceiling fan. I felt like I live a life in the Scarface movie. My secret: During the massive volcano eruption 2010 in Iceland, I had to stay in Miami 2 weeks more than planned because we couldn’t fly back. So we stayed after our 2 weeks of vacation 4 weeks total. We rent a hotel apartment in north Miami Beach. It was a spectacular decorated hotel, probably had its best times in the 1970s. We knew there where good parties going on in the good old Cocain Cowboys times. We stayed there and had a good time. Enjoyed the beach, we listened to a lot of music and I had to admit I tried out some drugs. But I never had a desire to do drugs consistently. So it was a onetime adventure. I’m an Artist and a dedicated creative – I like to play hard, but I love to work harder.

Carnival Season is in Full Swing!

By Dawn Wilson Since Carnival is in full swing, we decided to mention the things that are commonly found at Carnival festivals in the Caribbean and in North America. J’Ouvert: This is the pre-carnival parade, which kicks off Carnival. Music: The music that is commonly played during the festival is Dancehall, Zouk and Calypso. Mas: This is the big parade that takes place on Carnival Tuesday! Top Caribbean Carnivals in the Caribbean: Cayman Islands (May) Although the Cayman Islands Carnival festival isn’t as old as some of the others, it has become widely popular in a short amount of time. It began as a way to celebrate the history of its African residents, along with the mix of other cultures, who now call the Cayman Islands home. St. Vincent & The Grenadines (June/July) What you can expect to see when you attend here is steel pan performers, J’Ouvert (pre-carnival party parade), a beauty pageant, and more. The dancing is infectious, so make sure you get plenty of rest and bring comfortable shoes. There is a good chance that other partiers won’t let you leave, you’ll be dancing until the sun comes up. Top Caribbean Carnivals in North America: Toronto (July) This is said to be the largest of its kind in North America. It attracts over a million visitors yearly. Like the festivals held in the Caribbean islands, you can still expect to see band performances, extravagant parades, interesting costumes, lots of dancing and music. Miami (October) If you are looking for something fun and exciting to do during Columbus Day weekend, stay in Miami for our annual Caribbean Carnival festival, One Carnival. It is a celebration of the Caribbean culture, art heritage and traditions. There are masquerade balls, parades and plenty of cuisine represented by the many islands of the Caribbean.

Never Before Seen Photographs of David Bowie Debuted in Design District

By Alyse Mier Photography by World Red Eye Markowicz Fine Art Gallery and celebrity photographer and director Markus Klinko collaborated on an exhibit that pays tribute to late pop culture icon David Bowie. The exhibit debuted on February 25th and features 14 never before seen photographs of Bowie, who passed away earlier this year. The photographs were meant to represent Bowie’s “strength and wild side” and are symbolic of the different phases throughout Bowie’s lifetime. Klinko’s cover photo for Bowie’s 2002 album, Heathen, is also on display. “Before creating the album cover Bowie invited me to the recording studio to listen to the album. The album was going to be released a year after 9/11 and Bowie’s idea for the album cover was for it to convey a somber feeling. That’s why he has that mask over his eyes,” said Klinko. The exhibit will travel nationwide, but Bowie’s creative spirit will live on in Miami through mid-March. “Bowie was an exceptional man to work with.
