De La Cruz Collection Presents Lecture Series with Sterling Ruby

The Miami Design District and De La Cruz Collection Contemporary Art Space present art lovers everywhere with a special treat – a lecture series by Sterling Ruby. The lecture series will take place  tonight at 7:30pm (doors open at 6:30pm). De La Cruz provides such lectures with distinguished artists to speak and interact with young artists who aspire to grow their artistic visions and work. The collection space is funded by Carlos and Rosa de la Cruz and has been open to the public for 25 years. Sterling’s art consists of ceramics, painting, collage, video, and more. His interesting work has led him to be known as “one of the most interesting artists to emerge in the twentieth century,” says art critic Roberta Smith of The New York Times. A variety of work can be seen in his style, including psychological effects, graffiti, hip-hop culture, craft, punk, masculinity, prisons, globalizations, and much more.  For more information, please visit www.delacruzcollection.org

Hausammann Gallery Opens in Wynwood

The event was co-sponsored by MSM, Lolea, and Bastille. To celebrate, artist Fernando Carlo, Jr. (also known as Cope2), left the audience in awe as he performed a live painting session while his latest work, Power of Influence, adorned every wall of the gallery. The Bronx native began his career as an artist in 1978 and is internationally known as the founder of graffiti art. With notable collaborations with Adidas and Time Magazine under his belt, the Hausammann Gallery couldn’t think of a better artist to kickoff the start of a new chapter. Attendees included lots of Miami natives and even drew audiences hailing all the way from New York, who expressed their beliefs of Wynwood rising to become the new art capital of the world. The original Hausammann Gallery was founded in Cortina d’Ampezzo, Italy by Renato Hausammann. Today, the gallery is still kept close to the heart of the family as it is managed by the third generation, Beatrice and Federico Hausammann. My Miami: Nadja Atwal

Photography by Enrique Vega Nadja Atwal, 35, is a “jack of all trades”  businesswoman, and a style  public relations expert. She designs, writes, inspires, coaches, and produces media projects: from animal rights photo campaigns for PETA to feature films like Without Men, starring Eva Longoria. In 2013, she was named “Sexiest Power Woman of All-Time” by U.S. Lifestyle magazine, Viva Glam. The German born amazon, who currently resides in New York with her husband and son, was also appointed as the “fashion police” for the Oscars for European TV. She was also just hired as the style and beauty expert for the U.S. TV Show America’s It Girl. In Miami, you can catch me… At the amazing James Royal Palms Hotel, where I am building sandcastles by the beach with my husband and our 3 year old son, or riding one of their rental bikes. And, if we have a babysitter with us, dancing at Club Mynt at night. It’s also a special treat hanging out with my favorite Miami person, Supermodel Joanna Krupa. The biggest misconception about Miami is… That it is mainly a party town. For me, it has become my favorite sweet escape with the family. It is up to you to discover the Miami you want. The last restaurant I enjoyed in Miami was…. Lure Fishbar. I never take food pictures, but here I photographed their lovely sushi creations from every angle. Plus, I enjoyed the rustic yet romantic interior design. While we were there, the mayor enjoyed his dinner next to our table, so we felt like exclusive “Miami insiders.” What surprised me most about 35, is a “jack Miami was… The convenience factor with regards to the distance of the airport to the beach. The beauty of the art deco houses that can never be matched in photographs – you gotta experience it, walk by, stop, gaze. What titillated me was the prodigiously endowed mannequins in front of some shops on Collins Avenue. I believe it even surpasses Vegas standards. Aside from the weather, the best reason to return to Miami is… We (New Yorkers) are all about time and saving time. Those convenient 2-hour, 45-minute direct flights from New York to Miami are simply too tempting to ignore. The first time I became really curious about Miami was… When I watched Scarface. Even though most of the scenes were filmed in California, they took the right kind of establishing shots in Miami. What happens in Miami stays in Miami… and in MSM. Any secret or funny moment you ‘d like to share about you and this city? I was featured in an episode of The Real Housewives of Miami being productive and not causing drama. Around the World in Eighty Works

By Angela Betancourt An artistic journey around the world begins with just a single step into the Markowicz Fine Art Gallery. On February 12th, the gallery is hosting famed French painter and sculpture Alain Godon for an invitation-only one-man architectural exhibition titled Around the World in Eighty Works. The exhibition will unveil new sculptures from Godon’s Architectural series which captures the sites and spirit of famous international cities like New York, Paris, and Miami through paintings and sculptures. The series, which he began in 2006, depicts iconic architectural landmarks from each location with vibrant colors that beautifully blend together and captures the imagination. Each of his bronze sculptures corresponds to an existing painting and pays homage to the landmark’s unique design and structural element. The opening exhibit event will take place from 6 to 9pm. Invited guests will experience a total of 80 works and immerse themselves in Godon’s BildoReliefos original technique that garnered him worldwide attention when it was introduced in 2009. The Markowicz Fine Art Gallery is located at 110 NE 40th St in the Design District. The exhibit will be open to the public February 13-28, Monday to Saturday from 10am to 7pm.

Art Deco Weekend

By Angela Betancourt The 38th Annual Art Deco Weekend celebrated 100 years of Miami Beach history, architecture, and culture. From January 16th -18th, Ocean Drive traveled back in time to one of the city’s most iconic eras. Live jazz, dynamic lectures, and a classic car show were just some of the event’s treats. Thousands of people attended to see street performers, eat delicious food, and shop at over 100 artisan vendor booths. This year’s Art Deco Weekend also hosted the first annual Deco Dance-a-Thon fundraiser on Saturday at The Promenade from 3-6pm. Prizes were awarded for a variety of categories and all participants entered into a raffle to win a 5-day trip to Napier, New Zealand valued at $5,000. Cirque du Soleil Partners with Spectrum Miami During Art Basel Week

By Angela Betancourt During Art Basel and Miami Art Week, Cirque Du Soleil partnered with the contemporary art show SPECTRUM Miami in the Wynwood Design District, to promote its new show Amaluna directed by Tony Award Winning Director Diane Paulus. Amaluna, will be touring around the world this year and saw Art Basel and Miami Art Week, as the perfect time and setting to launch the first performance. The show premiered to the general public on December 11, 2014 at the iconic blue and yellow Big Top at Sun Life Stadium. However, SPECTRUM attendees were privy to a sneak peak of the performance and a behind-the-scenes look at the extraordinary show. Amaluna is a story that celebrates women and femininity. It takes place on the mysterious island of Amaluna that is governed by Goddesses and guided by the cycles of the moon. Overcoming adversity, spiritual renewal, family, and love are all themes that play a role in the show. In true spirit of the performance, SPECTRUM “captured” a Cirque du Soleil artist, from the island of Amaluna, for the purposes of public observation. They recreated her natural habitat at the fair and dazzled guests as they witnessed the exclusive look at how the artist prepared for the show. She effortlessly moved her body from one mind blowing position into another as she demonstrated her graceful strength and control. Fair goers were also able to observe the “Crystal Goddess” and her porcelain-like disposition before she was shared with the rest of the world. SPECTRUM Miami is one of the largest shows, at 350,000 square feet, during Art Basel and Miami Art Week. Its growth and success is in part due to its reputation for incorporating these types of performances and artistic components. This partnership between Cirque du Soleil and SPECTRUM attracted thousands of visitors that wanted to see the extensive collection of art and partake in all the excitement being generated by Amaluna, while simultaneously drawing a lot of attention to some of SPECTRUM’s other exhibits. In addition to showcasing a collection of contemporary artworks from artists around the world, SPECTRUM puts a lot of emphasis on bringing in the local art community. During the fair they introduced a special curated Art Labs Series that featured educational projects and seminars by leading Miami-based art institutions. They also presented Yo Miami, a live invitational mural painting collaboration by veteran artists and up-and-comers. The fusion of these different artistic elements has made SPECTRUM a leading fair during the art-filled week and will continue to make SPECTRUM one of the most anticipated fairs for many years to come. The Natural Pastels Art Exhibit

By Angela Betancourt This Sunday January 11th from 11am- 4pm, The Futernick Family Art Gallery is celebrating the launch of the Natural Pastels Art Exhibit with an opening reception and brunch. The Natural Pastels Art Exhibit will feature work by more than ten South Florida artists that have used soft pastels in their creations. Ranging in levels of experience and individual styles, the artists will showcase a variety of pieces that include depictions of landscapes, animals, and still lifes. Guests will have the opportunity to explore how versatile and beautiful this art form can be. “The soft pastels were created by a group that works together at Fairchild Tropical Botanical Garden. We admire and learn from each other as we use this challenging but vibrant medium. As a member of the class, it’s quite a treat to be exhibiting with the others, in addition to fulfilling my usual role of putting on exhibits in the Futernick Family Art Gallery,” said Suzy Breitner, Visual Arts and Museum Director. “Particularly gratifying for all of us is the opportunity to dedicate this show to a talented and valued class member, Terrie Newman, who sadly passed away a few months ago. Her work will be prominently displayed.” The exhibit is free and will run through February 21, 2015. Miami VIP’s sipped on champagne and cocktails while lounging in the ultra-chic upper level. Artistic displays of the Ruinart bottles combined with Cavalli’s sophisticated luxe-lounge truly embodied the ultimate night out on the Beach.

A Warm Wave of New York’s Contemporary Abstract Expression— The Artist Zuz Delights Miami Beach Art Basel VIP’s

The room stood with anticipation as NYC artist Zuz (aka The Artist Zuz) unveiled her latest work Silk and Paper. The reveal took place at a special reception during Art Basel in Miami Beach at a celebration of her show made possible by Sriracha House. Part of the night’s excitement was the exclusive preview of Zuz’s silk sculptures – an unusual combination of painted textile, which the artist molds onto a wire mesh, forcing permanence on what is typically an esoteric styling of fabric. The result was a sensual display of undulating drapery topped with the signature painted line work for which The Artist Zuz is known. (Her work can be seen online at www.IamZuz.com).     Guests also had the chance to take home one of two sketches, which the artist created specifically for the evening’s affair. “I work intuitively in a style similar to action painting but I focus on resolving complexities in a way that is positive and exciting,” said Zuz at the reception. “That’s what I wish to pass on through the work and it was a pleasure to extend that vibe by giving something back to those who came to support my work.” Her colorful collection of sculptures and drawings is pleasantly positive in tone, a direct reflection of The Artist Zuz’s vibrant energy.     In keeping with the playful spirit of the night’s event, each winner was announced over a guest-given drum roll before they ran up to the front to claim their original works. The rest of the attendees happily snacked on Asian-fusion cuisine provided by the newly opened Sriracha House and basked in the afterglow of contemporary expression, as translated by The Artist Zuz. A successful evening for everyone involved and possibly even a sign of an emerging movement within the contemporary art scene.

AG Jeans “Art of Jeans” Art Basel-Inspired Event

By Katie Jackson Last Thursday evening, AG Jeans hosted their Art Basel-inspired event “Art of Jeans” at their Aventura Mall location. The luxury jean brand displayed uniquely eye-catching denim-inspired pieces alongside other paintings by local Miami artists. Attendees sipped on complimentary cocktails and noshed on adorable bite-sized “AG” inspired cupcakes and cake pops while DJ Bre provided live beats. Giveaways by LUSH were the perfect addition as attendees perused the eclectic artwork. The pieces were then auctioned off in-store with proceeds given to local art-related charities. With artistic luxury denim, LUSH, and philanthropy, it was Art Basel done perfectly.

Zebra Love by Blake Emory

Abstract artist, Blake Emory, used his signature style to debut his Zebra Love collection in this year’s Art Basel Miami. His artwork was showcased in Optic Modernism at this year’s Spectrum Miami. The pieces represent Emory’s discovery of what he refers to as “nature’s grand design” through a combination of fashion and “divine geometry” inspired by the animal kingdom. If you look closely, you can see the silhouette of a female model. Not only is Emory invested in his artwork, but he has also teamed up with Michael Alden, CEO and President of Blue Vase Marketing, to release a limited edition premium vodka in March 2015. The vodka is modeled after his Zebra Love collection is to be named “Emory Vodka.”

Art Basel Week: Red Dot Art Fair

By Angela Betancourt  Entering its eighth year, the Red Dot Art Fair is one of the leading art shows during Art Basel and Miami Art Week every December. More than 25,000 visitors attended last year to explore Red Dot’s vast collection of modern and contemporary art. The fair has continuously introduced enthusiasts and seasoned collectors to new artists and galleries from around the world. Their mission is to serve as a platform where galleries specializing in emerging, mid- career, and established artists can present their work in a thriving art environment. For years, Red Dot’s eclectic galleries have boldly displayed works of art that range from the exquisite to the bizarre and everything in between. Onlookers are left to draw their own conclusions as they navigate through more than 50 galleries and hundreds of sculptures, paintings, photography, and fine-art. The fair returns to its 50,000 sq ft pavilion in the Wynwood Art District and will run December 2-7. The opening reception will take place on Tuesday, December 2nd and will benefit the Center for Autism & Related Disabilities (CARD), a free community based program that provides support and assistance to people with autism and Million Trees Miami, a community-wide effort to plant 1 million trees by 2020 in Miami-Dade County. The event will undoubtedly attract the press and Miami’s VIP eager to be the first to see the exhibits. This year the fair welcomes the return of the Latin American Art Pavilion, a collaboration with an exclusive group of Latin American artists represented by top galleries. The increasing demand for exhibits by emerging and renowned artists from Latin America served as the inspiration to launch the pavilion while demonstrating the fair’s propensity for embracing international artists. International exhibitors participating this year include: The Parisian gallery Envie D’Art, which represents numerous European artists; the Prodanovich Gallery featuring the work of Serbian mixed- media artist Vladimir Prodanovich; Galleria Ca’ d’Oro, one of Rome’s best known contemporary art galleries; and Gallery Edel from Japan that curates a variety of modern art. US and local galleries exhibiting include: The Estate of Bert Stern, Hollywood’s legendary and “original madman” photographer that captured some of the most iconic celebrity images of his time; Nicholas Yust Fine Metal Art, showcasing intricate metal creations; Allan Rodewald Fine Art, featuring a combination of abstract and fine art pieces; and Miami’s Projects Gallery in Wynwood. With such a wide array of quality art and exhibits, fairgoers have a lot to look forward to and Red Dot is once again on the path to another successful year.
