The Illamasqua Haunting

Whether we like it or not, the eve of Halloween is upon us. Ghost and ghouls will soon emerge from lawyer’s offices and photography studios where they lurk during the day, and terrorize the streets in their most capable yet outlandish disguises, leaving their day job behind for the night. In order to prep for such a wicked, confection-craze fright-fest, they flood into the Illamasqua counter at Bloomingdales in the Aventura Mall by the numbers. Illamasqua is a UK based make-up brand that has spread like an epidemic from the English Channel all the way to American shores, landing in homeland soil and bringing colorful individuality to cities like New York, New Jersey, Chicago and most recently, Miami. Every first Saturday of each month, the “movement” of a brand educates eager, make-up buffs on the ins and outs of proper application along with the use of each product (like their cruelty-free, synthetic brushes) by holding first-hand tutorials of tricks and tips to refine your once amateur beauty skills to expertise levels. In this week’s Beauty School Drop In class, the Illamasqua “creatives” schooled the “pupils” on how to make heads do a 360-degree turn while howling at the full moon light, or maybe just enjoying a signature Eyeball Martini at your best friend’s Monster Mania soiree, either way, Illamasqua has the “faces” that you need to be wearing on October’s most celebrated day of the dead. Little Lolita – Good for guises like geishas or flappers. Poison Ivy’s Evil Twin – Try this look for a playful peacock or a seductive serpent. The Queen of Darkness – Although this look could go with just about anything, we recommend pairing it with a racy cat suit or a Wicked Witch from the Southeast number.

Q&A with Cindy Barshop, founder and owner of Completely Bare

Interviewed by Samantha Marie, Lifestyle Editor Photo’s courtesy of Siren Public Relations, Inc. MSM gets the facts from Cindy Barshop, founder and owner of Completely Bare… SM: Is it necessary to hire a licensed esthetician for waxing, or is this something that anyone can do themselves at home? CB: It’s not necessary to hire a licensed esthetician if you have great quality products at home. For those who prefer to wax at home, Completely Bare’s Salon Quality Bikini and Body Wax Kit, Salon Quality Face & Other Sensitive Areas Wax Kit and Hypo Allergenic Wax Strips for Face, Bikini, Body help to achieve wonderful results and are the same high-end, result-oriented quality wax used in my New York spas.  If you are going to a spa, make sure the aestheticians there are licensed; if you are paying someone for a service they should have the proper credentials and deliver stellar results. SM: What are some of the pros and cons of waxing, shaving, and laser hair removal? CB: First and foremost, your preferred method of waxing, shaving and/or laser hair removal really depends on the person. Some of the pros of waxing include: – An immediate result – It’s not as expensive – Can wax either in the convenience of your home or at a spa The cons of waxing include: – It’s more painful – Ingrown hairs are possible – Have to wait for it to grow back before waxing again – You have to wax for the rest of your life The pros of laser include: – Gets rid of it forever – Rejunvates skin in area – No irritation – At some point, you begin to save money – You’re forever hair-free – Great for coarse, dark skin – Great if certain parts of hair on your body affect your everyday life Some of the cons of laser include: – It’s more expensive, as it’s a larger up-front cost – Cant have a fresh suntan; you need to wait two weeks before going for your laser appointment Some of the pros of shaving include: – Fast results – It’s inexpensive The cons of shaving include: – It can grow back faster and thicker – Can lead to ingrown hairs SM: How long must the hair length be before you can wax your legs, under arms, bikini area, etc..? CB: I would advise for hair to be 1/4 inches long before waxing any area of the body.   About Completely Bare: Founded on Madison Avenue, New York City over ten years ago by hair removal expert Cindy Barshop, the single spa in NYC has grown into a national success. WINTER SKIN PROTECTION

1. Cleanse your skin with a gentle cleanser and WARM water. A hot shower may feel great during the cold temperatures, but it will destroy the top layer of your skin that helps retain moisture and will dry out your skin even faster. Stay away from soaps that have strong antibacterial ingredients and deodorants that contain skin irritating ingredients. 2. Modify your facial skin care routine by skipping the toners and astringents. These products are for drying out excess oils in the skin and may dry you out further during the winter. Use sparingly in case you do need it. 3. With cold windy dry air and hot heat pounding at your skin daily, moisture is continuously being pulled. Apply moisturizer frequently throughout the day as often as your skin feels tight and dry. 4. Do not ditch your sun protection just because the days are shorter. Using an SPF is important no matter what time of year it is. Use a minimal SPF of 15 to ensure sun protection and re-apply every 1-2 hours. 5. Exfoliating will help clear skin of dead dry cells that build up on your skin’s surface. This will help keep your skin smooth and promote new skin growth. Be sure not to over exfoliate this can damage the new cell growth and decrease the potency of your moisturizer. 6. Don’t forget that your lips have skin too. Exfoliate your pout with a yummy sugar scrub and follow up with a moisturizing lip balm.

Summer Beauty Secrets

By Samantha Marie Summer Issue 2012       I encourage you to always have products with SPF accessible, even when you go outside to the mailbox. I’d often neglect to wear sunscreen, because I developed irritation from products containing fragrance, and high amounts of alcohol. It is very difficult to find skin care products that are suitable for ultra sensitive skin. Once I discovered a few products that worked well with my skin type, it made a huge difference overall. I find my skin is more radiant and smooth. How often do you wear sunscreen? Is your answer, sometimes? or never? The following text, provided by various sources, explains the importance of wearing sun screen. According to the CDC : Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States. The two most common types of skin cancer—basal cell and squamous cell carcinomas—are highly curable. However, melanoma, the third most common skin cancer, is more dangerous. About 65%–90% of melanomas are caused by exposure to ultraviolet (UV) light. What is  Ultraviolet (UV) Light?  UV Rays are an invisible kind of radiation that comes from the sun, tanning beds, and sunlamps. UV rays can penetrate and change skin cells. I can assure you this piece of information is more than enough to convince me to wear SUNSCREEN! Here is some great advice provided by Lawrence Gibson, M.D., a dermatologist at Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minn. •Avoid the sun during peak hours. Generally, this is between 10 a.m and 4 p.m. — regardless of season. These are prime hours for exposure to skin-damaging ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun, even on overcast days. •Wear protective clothing. This includes pants, shirts with long sleeves, and sunglasses. Top it off with a wide-brimmed hat. In addition, consider investing in special sun-protective clothing for golf, gardening, walking, running — even swimming. •Use sunscreen. Liberal use of sunscreen is a key part of any program to protect yourself from the sun. •Apply generous amounts of sunscreen to dry skin 30 minutes before you go outdoors. •Use sunscreen on all skin surfaces that will be exposed to sun — especially your face, ears, hands, arms and lips. If you don’t have much hair on your head, apply sunscreen to the top of your head or wear a hat. •Coat your skin well and rub sunscreen in thoroughly. •Reapply sunscreen every two hours — more often if you’re perspiring. •Reapply sunscreen immediately after swimming. •Remember that sand, water and snow reflect sunlight and make it even more important to use sunscreen. •Since UVA rays penetrate glass and clouds, use sunscreen even when it’s cloudy or you’re indoors but in rooms with lots of windows. To understand more about sunscreen options please visit the following link: http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/best-sunscreen/MY01350 Here is a list of sunscreen products that I use regularly containing SPF: • EltaMD UV Clear SPF 46 – This product is Noncomedogenic, paraben-free, fragrance-free and sensitivity-free. What I love most about this product is it calms and protects sensitive, acne-prone skin. It is a very lightweight, oil-free formula leaves no residue on skin’s surface, and you can wear it under makeup. I encourage models to apply this product prior to photoshoots. I find my skin is less irritated after the application of makeup products used at shoots when I apply this product. The product creates a barrier between your skin and the makeup products, that will reduce the intensity of any irritation or break outs from miscellaneous makeup products. •NARS Pure Sheer SPF Lip Treatment This product comes in a variety of shades, so you can choose one that is practically invisible, one that offers subtle hint of color, or one that will enhance any lip color you put on underneath. I try often to use this underneath and on top of colors makeup artists apply to my lips during photo shoots, because of its super moisturizing benefits. Certain lip liners and lip stains/sticks can cause your lips to become dry and chapped.  Vitamin E is infused in the lip treatment, polar berries and açai oil to provide antioxidants and long-lasting hydration; A great product to use after applications of harsh products. • Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Body Mist Sunblock SPF 45 This product is great for those with sensitive skin because it is waterproof, sweatproof, non-comedogenic (won’t clog pores), and oil-free. I mist this on my legs, arms, shoulders, and neck every day. Even if I am only driving in my car, I still spray any part of my upper body that is exposed. The uv rays will penetrate right through the car window, even windows that are tinted. The product features Helioplex®, that provides superior balanced broad-spectrum protection against UVA-aging and UVB-burning rays in an ultra-light. The non-greasy finish is another reason why I prefer using this product, especially when I spray it on my arms, and hands. I would love to hear from you! BOND NO. 9 – MSM One on One with Laurice Rahme

By Sandra Mateu Summer Issue 2012       In homage to the city where anything is possible, artist and founder Laurice Rahme created a collection of fragrances that give every neighborhood of New York City a scent of its own. Bond No.9 is a brand that brings back the art aspect of perfume-making, while developing fragrances that go hand in hand with the ever-changing world of today. Wall Street, Chinatown, New Haarlem and Brooklyn, just to name a few, already have a perfume of its own. Each of them offers a taste of its people, its food, and its culture with a touch of progressiveness typical of the city that doesn’t sleep.  Bond No.9 offers a modern proposal by creating fragrances not only for men or women, but also unisex and “by making scents contemporary by adding a twist to the classic fragrance notes,” as her creator carefully explained. Rahme, who has an extensive and impressive background in the beauty industry having worked for Lancome, Annick Goutal and Creed, thought that New York City needed to be celebrated. She started her mission in 2003 by opening a boutique in NoHo, New York. “The name of our brand comes from our first boutique opened on 9 Bond Street. I wanted to honor every neighborhood of NYC and since I know the City very well, I started pairing their scents such as their delicious food, especially desserts and spices, to their location and creating a fragrance to celebrate it,” explained Rahme. While sitting at the second floor of Saks Fifth Avenue – Dadeland Mall in Miami, Florida, Laurice shows me a beautiful collection of gorgeous bottles of Bond No.9 and lets me try on Central Park West, a fragrance that comes with a cute necklace/bracelet and rose pin. As Rahme explained, Central Park West consists of “Narcissus mingled with tangy ylang ylang and a pinch of piquant pepper; a beckoning white-petal mélange and majestic gardenia.” She also tells me about their new scent Sag Harbor coming out on Memorial Day. “Sag Harbor is the only marine oud on the market. It is an easy going, sophisticated and enticingly beautiful fragrance,” said Rahme. Laurice came to Miami this May 11th and 12th for a special event at Saks Fifth Avenue where she not only promoted her fragrances, but also autographed bottles. This event donated 10% of the sales to three community organizations: Jewish Community Services Shalom Bayit, Women’s Fund of Miami Dade and La Liga Contra el Cancer (The League against Cancer). At the end of the interview, I asked Laurice if Bond No.9 had any plans of expanding her fragrance collection to other cities, and she proudly responded: “New York City deserves this celebration, especially with everything it has gone through. We want to stick to our mission and infuse the island of Manhattan with delicious scents.” Captivated by the enthusiasm and good energy of the conversation I dared to ask one more question. Hypothetically speaking, I said to Rahme, if there was a remote possibility of creating a fragrance for the city of Miami, what would it smell like? She laughed and responded without hesitation: “Ohhhh It would smell very, very sexy dear.” www.bondno9.com
