One On One With Red Carter

Swimwear designer Red Carter makes a giant splash in the fashion industry, and it’s only the beginning.  By Katie Jackson/Photo courtesy of Ken Pao In 2003, Miami gained a designing phenomenon when Red Carter left his native California to take his talents to the Magic City.  After working for major brands like Esprit, Guess, Victoria’s Secret, and Oscar de la Renta, Carter was finally ready to break out on his own. Inspired by Miami’s glamorous Art Deco style, Carter created and developed his swimwear brand out of his Miami Beach apartment. Now, Carter’s fashionable and sexy swimwear has catapulted him to the top, with numerous features in leading high fashion magazines and a large celebrity following.  Sadly for Miami, Carter recently relocated to New York City to continue growing his burgeoning brand, but will always have a special place for Miami in his swimwear and in his heart. For Carter, the desire to design clearly pulses through his veins. As a young child, Carter was already creating sketches for what would soon lead to a career in fashion. “I started drawing sketches of naked ladies, and my mom was like, ‘you can’t have all these pictures of naked ladies laying around!’ So she said, ‘why don’t you put clothes on them?’ So I started drawing dresses and watching vintage movies, and that sort of inspired me to see the art of fashion in movement,” says Carter.  He then went on to study at the prestigious Otis College of Art and Design in Los Angeles. After his graduation, Carter gained extensive experience working for top fashion brands and designers. But after taking a job with a start up company and being let go soon after, Carter decided it was time to take control of his career. “I found myself without a job, and I decided that I wanted to have my own message. So, I started my own brand,” says Carter. After moving to Miami 11 years ago, Carter says he was given a rare opportunity to “set the tone for luxury living.” Carter capitalized on the growing niche for high-end swimwear, creating polished yet glamorous pieces with a fun Miami edge for the fashionista with a flexible budget. “My customer is looking for a getaway, and they want to stand out. They definitely don’t want to wear what everyone else has,” says Carter.  Carter began designing his brand on his own dime and started selling his pieces out of his apartment. “We would do little shows, sell them out of little stores. I just paid my dues.” But it wasn’t long until Carter’s designs starting receiving massive attention.  Popular retail stores started carrying his designs and magazines began giving him features. Then in 2004, Carter participated in the very first Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Swim, launching him and his designs into an international spotlight. Today, Carter’s designs have been featured in multiple high fashion glossies, and have been spotted on notable celebrities like Rihanna, Jennifer Aniston, and the Kardashian sisters. One of his suits was even worn by Beyoncé in her music video “Grown Woman” off her mega-hit self-titled visual album “Beyoncé.” Upon finding out about the video, Carter said he was ecstatic. “I was like, are you kidding me? It was a great couple of minutes. I did the happy dance. It was kind of the most funny, anxious moment, but it was really great.” But even with the massive exposure, Carter stays humble. “I’ve never really taken it for granted. I’m always very flattered,” says Carter of the all the attention. “You’re only as good as your next design. So I’m very honored, but I always think to myself, what is possibly next? That was great, who else now? How else can I affect people?”  Carter has now relocated to New York City after joining the outerwear manufacturer Amerex Group. Joining Amerex Group has not only helped Carter grow his business, but also allowed him to be removed from the operations of the company and solely dedicate himself to what he truly loves: design. Carter is now able to work on multiple projects at once, including continuing to design suits for Jessica Simpson’s swimwear line, a project he was approached to do a few years ago.  As for when he’s back in Miami, you may catch Carter relaxing at The Standard or grabbing a bite to eat at Yardbird Southern Table & Bar. “It’s so bad, but so good,” Carter says of the restaurant. While he’s not particularly into the party scene, Carter says he loves to people watch when in Miami. “I’ll definitely relax by the local pools and watch what people are wearing and what their lifestyles are all about. That’s my little secret weapon.”  Although Carter is no longer living in Miami, he will be returning this summer to participate in the MBFWS 10th anniversary, but will not be doing a show. “It’s kind of an honorary participation,” says Carter.  Instead, he will be showcasing one of his prints from one of the last runway shows he did for MBFWS, which happens to be the piece featured in Beyoncé’s video.  While it’s clearly evident that Carter has made an enormous indent in the fashion industry, he remains the perfect balance of humble, passionate, and determined.  “I’ve had a great journey. I’ve had great seasons and I’ve had seasons of struggle. I think in the end, persistence is a true reward. Persistence is what you have to focus on. And not being a flash, but being a constant. Just follow your dreams and don’t give up.”  You can find Red Carter designs at Nordstrom and online at Niemen Marcus, as well as shopbop.com, southbeachswimsuits.com, and Everything But Water Stores worldwide.  Photo by Imani Ogden Click here to view this post in the July/August 2014 issue.

Fabiano De Queiroz of Evenpro Group

What is the Evenpro Group and what is your position there? Evenpro Group is a regional promoter for Latin America with more than 35 years experience in the live entertainment industry. Respected for its accolades throughout the years, the company does business with the world’s major agencies and artists as well as the largest Festivals in the world. I am the VP for talent & tours over Latin America and I coordinate an overall team that can reach more than 400 professionals at times across 12 countries.  That said, we wear many hats in this company especially nowadays. I cover marketing, announcement dates and on-sale dates, rider details, etc. Who are some of the most famous musical artists or bands you’ve had the pleasure of working with?  What are the most memorable moments of your work?  Throughout the last few years I have directly worked with artists like Metallica, Alanis Morissette, David Mathews Band, Oasis, Maroon 5, Kilye Minogue, Green Day, Duran Duran, Kelly Clarkson, Justin Bieber, Beyoncé, Thirty Seconds to Mars, REM, Santana, Sting, The Police, Paul McCartney, Rammstein, Eric Clapton, Iron Maiden, Jack Johnson, Shakira, System of a Down, Guns N’Roses, Evanescence, Michael Bublé, Morrissey, Norah Jones, Robert Plant, Tony Bennett, Selena Gomez, Bruce Springsteen, John Mayer, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Muse, The Cure, Bon Jovi, Alicia Keys, Black Eyed Peas, Bruno Mars, Amy Winehouse,  amongst others. Getting to visit the Amazon River for the first time with Alanis and then with Dave Mathews, Breakfast with John Taylor (Duran Duran) in Rio and seeing Paul McCartney take his wife to dance after coming down from the stage in concert in Saint Petersburg, Russia are what come to mind now, but I am sure I am forgetting something really cool. What are some of the most challenging aspects of your job? Keeping it cool when focus is needed. To juggle information and “fairness” can be quite tricky and you can never really be at ease with that, but with experience you tend to get better acquainted with the timing of it all. Challenges are ultimately what we strive for. What are the challenges in working production in Latin America versus the USA? The US is where it all started to get professionalized and where regulations and unions limit some aspects but also take care of most of the dangers and liabilities involved in doing live events. The lack of thorough provisions and mobilizations in Latin America makes it more difficult in some aspects but gladly we have been in the business long enough to identify providers that are reliable and work to international standards. Where do you see, with the economic crises worldwide, the industry of concert promoting heading to? The whole entertainment business is going through an exciting shift. From recorded music to live entertainment the rules are being bent to the point that new ones are being created and the concert business is moving along… The economy is ultimately the thermometer that tells us how we handle the business part of the industry but as long as there’s talent out there, there’s work to be done. When you are not working, what do you enjoy doing?  Love movies, cooking or eating out and playing some tennis on Saturdays. When all of that includes my wife and daughters then it is simply perfect.   Photography by Imani Ogden Click here to view post on the May/June 2014 issue.

Million Dollar Listing Miami Series Premiere Party

By Sherri Balefsky on June 20th, 2014 Photo by Imani Ogden On Wednesday evening, some of Miami’s top tastemakers gathered in South Beach to celebrate one of the summer’s hottest new shows: Million Dollar Listing Miami. The VIP-only event was held at the trendy Pearl Champagne Lounge at Nikki Beach and was a chance for the cast to mingle with friends, family, and colleagues just a week before the much-anticipated series premiere. The show’s stars, Chad Carroll, Samantha DeBianchi, and Chris Leavitt—all impeccably dressed to the nines—were in attendance. And although this season’s trailer hints that there certainly will be some drama between the cast members, the three were nothing but smiles as they posed together for photographers on the red carpet. MDLM, which is a spinoff of the hugely popular reality shows Million Dollar Listing LA and Million Dollar Listing New York, follows the three brokers (all of whom are among the leading agents in South Florida) as they fight to secure some of the area’s most sought-after properties for their affluent and, often, high-profile clients. Be sure to tune in to the season premiere on June 25 at 9:00 pm on Bravo. And look out for our exclusive interview with Chad Carroll in the upcoming July/August edition of Miami Shoot Magazine.

One on One with NPR’s Michel Martin

What inspired you to pursue a career in journalism?  I got hooked on journalism in college, writing for the college newspaper “The Harvard Crimson.” I was on a work-study scholarship though so I only had so much time to spend on an extracurricular activity that didn’t pay and didn’t count toward my degree. Clearly it was a labor of love.. Who was the most interesting guest you’ve had appear at NPR and why?   I don’t think that way. I focus on whoever is in front of me at the moment, I think that person deserves my full attention and I try to give it. But I will say that some of the guests who intrigue me the most at the moment are the activist African American pastors who oppose gay rights. I am thinking of two in particular, both men. Both very well educated; thoughtful people, you can’t pigeon hole them as ignorant, backwoods bigots who don’t know any gay people. Every time I have interviewed them they’ve been thoughtful, cordial and respectful to our LGBT guests but they don’t see the connection to their own struggles as black men of faith. It’s just an important reminder that just because two people have the same information it does not mean they are going to come to the same conclusions. What do you believe is one of the biggest issues our nation faces today that is under-reported in main stream media?  Oddly, it’s the media itself. I think people think of media people as very self centered and I can understand why, yet the disturbing trends in the news—the consolidation, the erosion of consistent local news coverage, the trend toward opinion over fact reporting are actually hard to report on and get your hands around. You don’t know what you don’t know. When I started out at the newspaper I read most often there were beat reporters in every jurisdiction covering schools, law enforcement ,  transportation, local government. You were expected to know what was going on almost before your sources did. Who has that now? Also, so much is going on around the world—thank goodness NPR is still opening bureaus around the world. Glitzy projects are great and win prizes and all that but I still want to know why the city is digging up my street. Congratulations on being this years recipient of the Hank Meyer Headliner Award. What does it mean to you to be the recipient of this prestigious Award?  How much time do you have? Ok seriously..broadcasting is a team sport but it can feel surprisingly lonely. You send your work out into the air and you sometimes wonder if anybody is listening. It’s a wonderful feeling to know that people are listening and even better seem to understand what we’re trying to do with Tell Me More, which is to talk about how the world is a changing in a way people can understand. What’s life like at home? Tell us about your family. I am married to William “Billy” Martin who is an attorney of some accomplishment (she said modestly) you might know him from some of the clients he’s represented (and the stories he has kept me from covering because of conflicts of interest! (Michael Vick, Jayson Williams, Bill Campbell, Wesley Snipes, Monica Lewinsky’s mom….) We have twins at home and our blended family includes two amazing young women and their families. We are very blessed. Where does Michel Martin go from here?  Just trying to keep calm and carry on.   Photo courtesy of NPR Click here to view post in the May/June 2014 issue.

The Dawn of Coral Gables Restaurant Week

It’s baaaaaaack. That’s right, grubbers and oinkers of the most magical city – Coral Gables Restaurant Week is steadily approaching and it’s added some rookies to its roster of native eateries. Now in its 7th year running, the three-week event will be featuring more than 35 hearty restaurants all hailing from – you guessed it – The Gables. Some of the grub hubs participating in this year’s event include Bulla Gastrobar, Café Abbracci, and comfort-food savant Swine Southern Table and Bar. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg, engorged with a colony of bistros, steakhouses, and wine bars. As for the newbies: Bellmont Restaurant, BrickTop’s, and La Tagliatella will be but a few stepping up to the plate for this year. “I am very excited to be part of the Annual Coral Gables Restaurant Week now in its 7th year. The week kicks off with a little “sneak peak” event called Taste of the Gables, June 5th. There, guests can satisfy their palates by sampling from selected, all battling to win the gold of “Best Taste of the Gables.” Advance tickets for general admission starts at $30. Miami Fashion Week 2014 Highlights

This weekend we remember those who have fallen, celebrating in the streets of South Beach by way of urban festivals and questionable behavior. But last weekend, the craziness was equally present. Instead of booty shorts and semi-exhibitionists riding around on vespas, there were leggy models and drapey maxi dresses prancing down the long, encircling runway at the Miami Beach Convention Center during Miami Fashion Week. The international fashion affair showed off up-and-comers like Lisu Vega, Stella Jean, and the Peruvian likes of Escudo as some of the events winners. Others, sadly missed the mark. Yet despite the segregation of those designers who truly know how to deliver, all was fair in love and fashion. Here were our favorite looks of Miami Fashion Week.

The Great British Garden Party

By Sherri Balefsky Photos courtesy of Vivacity On Friday evening, Miami’s finest congregated at the historic Biltmore Hotel in Coral Gables. The occasion? The Queen’s birthday. Yes, that Queen. Although her actual birthday is in late April and Her Majesty was not in attendance, guests spent the evening paying tribute to all things British. Hosted by the British Consulate-General of Miami, the GREAT British Garden Party was a way for local tastemakers to celebrate the best of the British creative sector that continues to amp up business in South Florida.    I had the pleasure of attending this invite-only event. I was greeted by three exquisite Bentleys—the quintessential British automobile. One was even painted in Union Jack designs. I was also able to spend a few moments inside the driver seat of a gorgeous black Bentley convertible. These shiny works of “art” set the tone for what was happening inside. After ogling the cars, I entered the Biltmore’s posh Country Club Ballroom, where I was given my Virgin Atlantic “ticket.” A ticket to all that Great Britain is known for—a red, white, and blue display, complete with a traditional bright-red London phone booth. Even the guests got into the theme and dressed their best in their chicest garden party attire. As a tribute to British style, many ladies donned colorful floral fascinators. Kevin McGurgan, Her Majesty’s Consul General in Florida, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands, kicked off the event with a few words to welcome guests. He then introduced the Mayor of Coral Gables, James Cason, who further applauded the unique partnership that has evolved between the British Embassy and the City of Coral Gables. He saluted the British businesses that continue to influence Miami in all industries from art to fashion to food. After the introductions, we were simply asked to enjoy! We drank tea, ate scones and other delicious pastries, and sipped on Bombay Sapphire. There was even a station set up so that guests could learn how to mix their own Bombay Sapphire cocktails. The highlight of the night was the interactive photo booth set up so that guests could take a picture with a Virgin Atlantic flight attendant with a backdrop that, once superimposed, made it seem that guests were actually mid-flight on a Virgin Atlantic airplane. All around, it was a bloody good time. Next stop—London!

Fashion Flight, From Paris to Miami

A piece of Paris fashion arrived to Miami Beach when the French boutique Roses and Dreams opened its doors in celebration of their grand opening in Miami Beach last Thursday night. Macarons and champagne greeted the guests who joined Valerie Engel, owner, on the inauguration and the ribbon cutting ceremony of the French clothing boutique. Miami Beach Chamber of Commerce President and CEO Jerry Libbin held the oversized scissors to cut the inaugurating ribbon with Valerie and gave start to the celebration. The boutique, decorated with vintage photos on the walls and pink and white roses accompanying French designers’ creations, such as Brigitte Bardot and Antik Batik, gave room to friends and family, shoppers and also Venezuelan actor Alberto Quintero and Next Model Chad Masters. Roses and Dreams is Valerie’s creation inspired by her studies in arts and fashion in Paris and her experience working for Chanel fashion house. She brings to South Beach Parisian apparels and accessories that will give a relaxed, yet chic look to the Miami girl. Beats and Brunch: R House Wynwood Brings Brunch and Music Series to the Menu

As if the art/food combo didn’t give us enough reason to crash Wynwood’s R House. Come this Sunday, chef and owner Rocco Curelli will join the Sunday Funday bandwagon by adding brunch to his artful menu of goodies. And what’s brunch without some mellow jams to get you in the mood? Case in point: Live music. The Sunday Brunch and music series, appropriately entitled “Saucy Sundays”, will guarantee an unlimited selection of traditional brunch dishes gone rogue for $35 per person. And if you dig the art on the house’s walls, then you’ll go nuts over masterpieces like the Seafood Cake Benedict, Chili-Coffee Braised Short Ribbed Sliders, and Purple Potato Tortilla, putting a not-so-brunchy twist on the expected brunch classics. Brunchers will wash down the evidence of their gluttonous sins with Skky Bacon-infused Bloody Marys and Byejoe Sangrias. But if modesty isn’t really your thing, then drink up by the gallons with the series’ Brunch and Bottomless drink special for $52.00. While your getting drunk off of food and drinks, heighten that buzz with live tunes courtesy of Laura of Miami and Patrick Walsh. Can’t make it out this week to grub and jive? Don’t fret because the electro bumps will be broadcasted through Wynwoods’s resident radio station – Klangbox.fm.   Be sure to jump on the reservations list by ringing up (305) 576-0201. R House is located at 2727 NW 2nd Avenue in Wynwood, Miami.

Michael Mina 74 to Host this Month’s Cellar 1954 Dinner Series

On any given night, the lobby of Miami Beach’s Fontainebleau is fully stocked with twenty-something-year-olds praying that God will bless them with the chance to make it past the mob of other twenty-something-year-olds, and through the double doors of LIV for an amnesiac night of headlining djs and bottle-poppin’ “good times”. Though known for it’s non-stop ragers, the “Queen Bey” of hotels has another fun fact hidden up its gem-encrusted sleeve – its old. That’s right. Since 1954 the hotel has welcomed star-studded guests from Elvis to Diddy to its internationally acclaimed doormat. And this Thursday, to celebrate it’s long-standing status – instead of brushing it underneath the rug with a little Botox – the hotel will host it’s monthly Cellar 1954 Wine and Dinner Series at Michael Mina 74, the hotels newest edition to its culinary hall of fame. The night will be centered on a four-course wine pairing dinner by chef de cuisine, Thomas Griese and Estate Director of Spanish winery Bodega Numanthia, Manuel Louzada, who will hand select some of Spain’s smoothest glasses. To kick off the night, KRUG bubbly will be imbibed by the privileged hordes of guests to warm up their grumbling stomachs for some heavy wining and dining. The restaurant’s private dining room will be offering up a specialty hand-tailored menu that follows: First course: Octopus ‘A La Plancha’ – served with a ruby crescent Potato, Romesco, Parsley, Smoked Marcona Almond and a glass of Termes 2010. Second course: Hay Smoked Rack of Lamb and Byaldi – Garlic en Chemise, Rosemary Lamb Jus Gras, Port Wine Croquant, served with Numanthia Magnum 2009. Third Course: Rocker 28 Dry Aged Rib New York Strip Loin – served up with spring Morels and Fava Bean Cassoulette, drizzled with Bordelaise Sauce and paired with your choice of Termanthia 2006, Termanthia 2008, or Termanthia 2010 (The Moment We’ve All Been Waiting For) Dessert: Chocolate Cake – peanut butter, Cocoa Nib, and malted milk. If that doesn’t bring a tear to your eye, I just don’t know what will. It takes $155 of your hard-earned cash to dive in indulgence for the night. Word of caution: reservations are highly recommended to assure that you’re fed well, so jump on that phone and make one today, or forever regret the day you didn’t.     Reservations: 877.326.7412 or visit Fontainebleau.com/cellar1954 Michael Mina 74 is located at 4441 Collins Ave, Miami Beach, FL 33140

Tongue and Cheek Celebrates It’s 1st Birthday

Miami Beach favorite, Tongue and Cheek has arguably withstood the test of time in an industry where failure is about as common as LiLo singing “Rehab” by Amy Winehouse. Case in point: a valid excuse to celebrate its one-year anniversary by way of a killer prix-fix menu. I thought we were the ones who were supposed to come bearing gifts. From April 15th (that’s tomorrow) through Sunday, April 20th, restaurateur Chef Jamie DeRosa will oblige his guests to a $65, five-course dinner menu that may or may not include resident dishes like the Cauliflower Panna Cotta with pickled vegetables and American caviar and Crisp Lamb Belly with barbecued octopus, roasted eggplant and romanesco, among other T&C favorites. But the real bill-slashers lie within the $2.00 beef sliders and the $4.00 T&C Classic Whiskey Sour courtesy of in-house mixologist, Sarah Welch. And to properly finish off the night, salted pretzel ice cream with cashew praliné, coffee cake and blackberry – if only for that ice cream. Not seeing your go-to dish on this week’s feted menu? Fret not. Because you can recommend any dish of your choice via T&C’s social media. Leave your coveted suggestions on their Twitter page, @tandcmiami.
