Raising Ryker: A Mother’s Journey Through Autism and Acceptance A story of strength, perspective, and acceptance. By Angie LaGuardia | April 2026 “The Story of Jessica & Ryker” | Miami Shoot Magazine From the Editor At Miami Shoot Magazine, we believe that the most meaningful stories are often the quietest, the ones rooted in resilience, love, and everyday courage. The story of Jessica and Ryker’s autism journey is one such story deeply personal, quietly powerful, and rooted in love.  In recognition of Autism Awareness Month, we felt it was important to share a story that reflects not only challenges, but growth, understanding, and the beauty found in seeing the world through a different lens. At its heart, this story is a reminder that every path is unique, and sometimes the most profound transformations happen in the quiet moments along the way. A Story of Strength and Resilience Every story begins with a moment, sometimes quiet, sometimes unexpected that changes everything. For Jessica and her son Ryker, that moment became the beginning of a journey shaped by resilience, love, and unwavering determination. What started as a deeply personal experience soon grew into something greater. A story not only of challenges, but of strength, awareness, and the power of community. Through each step, Jessica and Ryker continue to leave a lasting impression, reminding others that even the smallest moments can carry the greatest meaning. Building Awareness and Community As Jessica’s journey continued, she began to recognize the importance of awareness, acceptance, and community. What started as a personal experience quickly grew into a desire to help others better understand autism and the unique journeys families navigate every day. “I wish more people understood that children with autism need patience and acceptance above all else. They can feel, understand, and experience the world just like we do… they simply do it in their own way.” Through community events, shared experiences, and meaningful conversations, Jessica found strength in knowing she was not alone. These connections created opportunities for families to support one another, celebrate progress, and build a network rooted in compassion and understanding. “If society were more adaptable and inclusive, there wouldn’t be a need for them to ‘fit in’, it would just be normal. Our children don’t need to change who they are. They need to be heard, supported, and understood in the way that works for them.” A Journey of Love and Determination Behind every step forward is a journey shaped by love, determination, and resilience. For Jessica, this path has been one of learning, adapting, and embracing each moment with strength and purpose. Through both challenges and milestones, she has discovered that growth often comes in ways she never expected. “Our journey hasn’t always been easy, but it has taught me patience, understanding, and a deeper kind of love. Every step forward, no matter how small, is something to celebrate.” Together, Jessica and Ryker continue to move forward, finding meaning in everyday moments and strength in the bond they share. Their story is not defined by obstacles, but by perseverance, compassion, and the unwavering belief in what lies ahead. It is this spirit that continues to inspire those around them, a reminder that resilience often grows quietly, one moment at a time. Jessica and Ryker a quiet moment of love and connection. The Beginning of the Journey Like many parents, Jessica’s journey began with small moments, subtle observations that something was different, paired with an instinctive desire to understand and support her child in the best way possible. “Ryker was officially diagnosed right before he turned two years old, but in my heart, I knew long before then that something wasn’t quite right. He wasn’t reaching the milestones other children his age were, he struggled with solid foods, avoided eye contact, didn’t respond to his name, and wasn’t speaking or engaging in the ways I expected.” When the diagnosis finally came, Jessica describes it as a moment filled with fear, uncertainty, and grief for the expectations she once held. But alongside that heartbreak came something even stronger: love, resilience, and the determination to understand and support her son in the way he needed most. “When we finally received the diagnosis after getting approval to see a neurologist, it felt like a blow to the heart, one that’s hard to understand unless you’ve lived it. There was a flood of emotions: fear of the unknown, uncertainty about the future, and grief for the expectations I once held. But alongside that grief was an undeniable love was the one that pushed me to become stronger than I ever imagined possible.” Finding Strength Through Love As time passed, Jessica’s journey evolved from uncertainty into understanding. Through patience, perseverance, and unconditional love, she began to see the world through Ryker’s eyes, gaining a new perspective that reshaped not only her expectations, but her purpose. Over time, I came to realize that autism isn’t something that needs to be fixed. It’s something to be understood, embraced, and supported. Through this shift in perspective, Jessica found strength in moments that once felt uncertain. Each milestone, no matter how small, became meaningful. Every smile, breakthrough, and shared experience reinforced the beauty of Ryker’s individuality and the strength of their bond. What began as a personal journey gradually transformed into something greater a deeper appreciation for acceptance, compassion, and the importance of creating a world where every child is supported for who they are. This feature, beautifully penned by Imani Ogden, takes us into the heart of the Maestro Cares Foundation, a beacon of hope for children across the Americas. We are honored to share this story of compassion, dedication, and the power of community. In 2011, a chance visit to an orphanage in the Dominican Republic sparked a chain reaction of kindness and compassion. Zaidy Cárdenas, now Executive Director of the Maestro Cares Foundation, was volunteering at the orphanage when she discovered a group of boys living in a separate, overcrowded home with scarce resources. Deeply moved by their plight, Zaidy enlisted the help of her father, Henry Cárdenas, and international music icon Marc Anthony. Together, they visited the orphanage and were inspired by the boys’ resilience and unwavering determination. In that moment, the Maestro Cares Foundation was born. A Mission to Make a Difference Founded in 2012, the Maestro Cares Foundation is dedicated to building homes and schools for disadvantaged children throughout Latin America and the United States. The organization’s mission is simple yet profound: to create safe, loving environments where children can access quality education and enriching recreational programs. The foundation’s inaugural project, the Orfanato Niños de Cristo in La Romana, Dominican Republic, opened its doors in 2014 and has since become a beacon of hope for 50 boys. But the story doesn’t end there. Maestro Cares has grown its impact, expanding into educational programs in Peru and developing new initiatives in Colombia, Bolivia, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Guatemala, Chile, El Salvador, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Argentina, and across the United States. A Special Partnership Among the foundation’s most inspiring collaborations is its partnership with four-time world champion boxer Jorge Linares. Linares has generously donated his boxing gloves and iconic Samurai walk-out jacket from his 2021 fight against Devin Haney. More importantly, he serves as an ambassador and mentor at Brawlerz Box, sharing his expertise and passion with the next generation of athletes. Through Brawlerz Box and the Maestro Cares Foundation, Jorge Linares exemplifies the spirit of giving back, empowering young people to pursue their dreams and realize their full potential.
