The Festival of Trees: Shed a Leaf for Interior Architecture

By Michèle Bigler With Halloween around the corner, the holiday season has officially kicked off and you know what that means, time to take out your calendar and mark the most noteworthy events of the season. It’s a difficult time because you’ll be forced to pick and choose from a long list of momentous happenings, but not to worry, MSM has scanned some of them for you and will be providing you with the ultimate culture guide for the season. To kick off the myriad of events we’ve hand picked the 29th Festival of Trees a yearly fundraising in honor of the students at the Interior Architecture Department at FIU.  November 19th marks the 29th fundraiser in which all profits go to the Department of Interior Architecture (9th best in the United States). Those of you looking to succor the Arts and assist South Florida in escalating its artistic flourishing, this is the place for you to give back to the academic community. Head over to the iconic Moore Building for innovative tree designs donned by local designers and maybe bid on one while you’re there or just gawk at the pieces and the protagonist of the edifice: an interwoven installation by renowned architect Zaha Hadid. Her attempt to connect each floor symbolically suggests a transgression of borders that hits close to home in Miami and resembles a hypnotizing concrete grapevine.  Themes in the past have been known to “both compliment and contradict our period” and always “attempt to bring in what concerns our world today” according to previous attendees. Start your holiday season by spectating the work of and mingling with the best designers in South Florida, relishing spectacular cuisine and sipping a few liquid infusions. Amra & Elma Take NYFW 2015

Amra and Elma Beganovich are two sisters and digital influencers with a following of 840,000+ on social media. They are the founders of amraandelma.com, their personal lifestyle blog, and clubfashionista.com, an invite-only blogging platform dedicated to high quality content. They are based in Manhattan, and having just wrapped-up with New York Fashion Week, we wanted to get their take the latest in fashion. Here is what they had to say: MSM: Which designer’s fashion show of NYFW 2015 was the most inspiring in your opinion? Amra & Elma: We both loved the Desigual show because it was full of energy, and the styling was out of this world with the headpieces, the hairstyles and the vibrant colors. Aside from amazing designs and energy, we got to see our fashion icon—Iris Apfel, who is 94 years old and still the star of the show! Her quirky and signature style choices never cease to amaze us. MSM: What trends do you predict to be a hit this upcoming season from NYFW 2015? A&E: We think that the chic-minimalism is here to stay, and that adding a glamorous detail is what will give your outfit the “wow” effect. For instance, glasses with colored frames, extra pointy collars or oversized pockets will add a perfect touch to an already neutral outfit. MSM: Which trend can you not wait to wear? A&E: The tapestry like prints that Burberry Prorsum, Simone Rocha, and Mary Katronzou used on their jackets and other patchwork pieces. MSM: Whose street style looks from NYFW 2015 are your favorites? A&E: We loved the play on the 1970s hippie with a touch of glamour, where the girls wore large flare bell-bottoms with chunky high-heels, boho-floppy hats, and large curls. MSM: What new beauty trends made the biggest splash at the shows? A&E: We loved the shimmery eyes balanced with a nude look, where the eyes add a touch of sparkle together with opulent details, like jewelry or other accessories. The catch to this look is to keep it balanced with monotone outfit, where neutral colors like camel, navy, gray or black dominate.

Fishtail Wrapped Bun

Photography Courtesy of Latest-Hairstyles.com The fishtail braid has quickly become the modern day twist on braids. By simply adding this style to a low bun, a quick hairstyle can become an elegant up-do in minutes. Melissa Cook, contributor of Latest-Hairstyles.com, expresses her love for this fad: “Fishtail braids continue to be all the rage right now and this hairstyle features two of them.” You can dress it up for a wedding, or sport a casual look for a brunch date with your girls–either way, compliments are sure to come your way. “This fishtail wrapped up-do is quick and easy once you get the braiding part down, and the perfect hairstyle to keep in your beauty repertoire. This look is both trendy and chic, and luckily it looks trickier than it actually is to create!” Follow these steps and you’ll be on your way to chic hairstyle heaven. What you need: 2 alligator clips 4 elastic bands 1 donut bun 3-6 hair pins Hairspray Step 1 With a part on the right side, separate off a portion of hair from the part down to the left ear. Clip off the back portion of hair with an alligator clip. Step 2 Pick up a section of hair near the part and begin a fishtail French braid. This is done by dividing the section into two halves and crossing small sections of hair underneath to the opposite side while incorporating hair into the braid each time. Step 3 When all of the hair is brought into the braid, finish braiding the section down into a regular fishtail braid. Step 4 Gently pull on the edges of the braid to loosen and create a fuller braid. Tie off the end with a clear elastic band. Step 5 Repeat the previous steps creating another braid on the right side of the head. Step 6 Let down the hair at the back and sweep it up into a low ponytail, tying it off with another elastic band. Step 7 Take a hair donut and wrap it over the ponytail. Step 8 Spread the hair around the donut and wrap another hair band over the top to secure it. Step 9 Twist the hair sticking out from the donut and wrap it around the base of the bun. Step 10 Pin down the ends with a hairpin. Step 11 Pick up the braid from the right side of the head and wrap it over the top of the bun and around to the left side. Step 12 Slide in some hairpins to secure the braid against the head. Step 13 Now wrap the braid from the left side over the bun. Step 14 Pin this braid down with another hairpin. Step 15 Shower the style with hairspray and smooth down any fly-aways. For more information, visit Latest-Hairstyles.com
