Hausammann Gallery Opens in Wynwood

By Gisel Habibnejad Photography by Korey Davis Video by Alex Medina, Voiceover by Jessica Faroy Last Saturday, the Hausammann Gallery’s Wynwood location opened its doors to the public for the first time. The event was co-sponsored by MSM, Lolea, and Bastille. To celebrate, artist Fernando Carlo, Jr. (also known as Cope2), left the audience in awe as he performed a live painting session while his latest work, Power of Influence, adorned every wall of the gallery. The Bronx native began his career as an artist in 1978 and is internationally known as the founder of graffiti art. With notable collaborations with Adidas and Time Magazine under his belt, the Hausammann Gallery couldn’t think of a better artist to kickoff the start of a new chapter. Attendees included lots of Miami natives and even drew audiences hailing all the way from New York, who expressed their beliefs of Wynwood rising to become the new art capital of the world. The original Hausammann Gallery was founded in Cortina d’Ampezzo, Italy by Renato Hausammann. Today, the gallery is still kept close to the heart of the family as it is managed by the third generation, Beatrice and Federico Hausammann. With the help, of their mother, Gioia, the gallery keeps its traditional family values alive.  For more information, please visit www.hausammanngallery.com

The Miami Open Celebrates 30 Years

By Angela Betancourt Photography Courtesy of Miami Open  This year marks the 30th anniversary of the Miami Open taking place from March 23rd- April 5th at Crandon Park Tennis Center in Key Biscayne. Over the past three decades, the tournament has grown into one of the largest tennis events in the world; offering more than $10 million in prize money and attracting more than 300,000 spectators and a plethora of celebrities. The tournament has become one of Miami’s premier events, and in addition to enhancing the city’s image internationally, it has had a major financial impact for Miami-Dade County. “Our event generates an economic impact of $386 million annually which is the equivalent of hosting a Super Bowl. That does not include the 12,000 hours of global TV coverage in 193 countries the tournament generates,” said Adam Barrett, Miami Open Tournament Director. “Over the last 30 years, the tournament has grown from a family run event into one of the biggest, most glamorous and most prestigious events in the world. But what I think is even more impressive is how the tournament has been a leader in the sport in terms of how an event entertains its guests,” he added. In addition to watching world class tennis players compete, the Miami Open wants attendees to feel more engaged in the experience. They transform Crandon Park from a tennis center into an interactive and social environment. Events for children, VIP lounges, live music, a food court, and shopping are just some of the features they can enjoy. “The Miami Open has always looked for new ways to make the experience on-site special both on and off the court. Whether we are bringing in on-court entertainment and celebrity musical performers pre- match, having live performances on our entertainment stage, or offering unique shopping and food and beverage experiences we strive to make everyone’s time here special. Today, you see events all over the world using the same model we started here in Miami.” The tournament was founded in 1985 by former US Pro Championship tennis player Butch Buchholz, who had a vision to create the first major tennis event of the New Year. The Miami Open has had a few name changes along the way. In 2000, the event was rebranded as the Sony Ericsson Open. In 2002, the event was renamed to the NASDAQ-100. In 2007, it once again became the Sony Ericsson Open and maintained that name until 2014. Late last year, tournament owner IMG announced a new sponsor and a new name. For the next four years, the event will officially be named the Miami Open presented by Itaú. Itaú is the largest privately owned bank in Latin America. This is the first time Miami is part of the name and the change has been welcomed with open arms. “We are very excited to have Miami in the tournament name. When people hear the name Miami they think energy, excitement, luxury, and world-class service. These are all traits that are synonymous with our event, and being able to better align the Miami brand with the tournament can only help the continued growth of the event. We were fortunate to find a presenting sponsor like Itaú who agreed with this philosophy and were on-board with this idea from the start,” said Barrett. Improvements have also been made to the tennis center site itself. They’ve added new shade structures to the food court for a more enjoyable dining experience and have also spruced up their social media efforts with the addition of a new Social Media Wall by SAP. Barrett also wants guests to know that the repairs to the Bear Cut Bridge have been completed and that the tolls at the entrance to the causeway have been replaced with Sunpass. The change to Sunpass will certainly help the flow of traffic and that is welcoming news because IMG is expecting to exceed 300,000 visitors this year. Celebrating 30 years is a testament to the dedication that IMG and Miami-Dade County have to keep tennis thriving in Miami. However, the true stars of the show are the tennis fans around the world who will continue to make this event a success. Barrett feels that “we are so fortunate to be able to host this event in one of the most vibrant, metropolitan, and diverse cities in the world. The entire South Florida community has really embraced the tournament and they are wonderful tennis fans. It is what makes this event so special. The energy and excitement that our fans bring to the event are very unique among our events. It doesn’t matter what country a player is from, they are guaranteed to have a large contingent of fans.”   Click here to view post on the 2015 March/April issue.

The Most Memorable at SoBe WFF

By Nycole Sariol Was it the pulled pork sandwiches being doled out like hotcakes at Miami Smokers? Or was it Guy Fieri demonstrating how to make a mountain of legendary nachos? Perhaps it was Andrew Zimmern hitting a high note at Best of the Munchies; either way food enthusiasts of all shapes and sizes raced to the beach in droves for arguably the most coveted event South Beach has to offer: South Beach Wine and Food Festival 2015. With every event and party thrown, so came a celebrity chef attached to it. Like a true animal advocate, Rachael Ray somehow managed to flawlessly – and sanitarily – blend her two loves into one event for Yappie Hour at the Standard Hotel. Pooches and their proud owner were obliged to some delicious treats being passed about during the event. Emeril threw his yearly luau bash Art of Tiki on the Shore Club’s white sands, where Broken Shaker took home the night’s People’s Choice Award and people nibbled on small plates while rocking out to some killer live performances. But the heart of all of this year’s culinary undertakings rested firmly beneath some tents off of Ocean Boulevard. The Grand Tasting Village is the first thought that usually comes to mind when on talks South Beach Wine and Food Festival, and justifiably too. This year, the participating booths of local restaurants and alcohol venders organized themselves into hubs by city. The competition was stiff concerning the weekend’s winning booth, but the most memorable out of the dozens had to go to Miami Smokers for their pulled pork sandwiches: slow-cooked, juicy pork meat, shredded and smashed between a soft roll of Hawaiian bread with slices of pickled beets lending a bitter zest to the garlic-induced mojo consuming the pork. All tasty bites aside, what really left us star-struck at the tents were the celebrity chef demonstrations. We managed to catch chef Aaron Sanchez mid-whipping up authentic Mexican delicacies before witnessing the miracle of all things cheese sauces, chips, and “a mess of jalapeños” that came into fruition as a glorious mountain of nachos stacked up by everyone’s favorite spikey-haired blondie, Guy Fieri. Until next year, “eaties.” Photographed by Katrina McLaughlin

“Just Move” with 24 Hour Fitness

By Gisel Habibnejad Starting a new workout routine can be difficult and 24 Hour Fitness understands that. They have developed a new program, called Just Move, to encourage everyone to get up and move! Last week, 24 Hour Fitness clubs across the country hosted Zumba classes to celebrate and motivate people everywhere to start-up their daily exercise schedule now. They host monthly courses dedicated to show people that exercising can be fun and different. What else sets this gym apart from the others? The environment of friendly instructors and sense of community help gym-goers forget they are actually working out. They help find solutions according to your lifestyle to accommodate your fitness goals. No matter what, you can always find time to work on your fitness at this gym. We caught up with Lashaun Dale (Vice President, Group X, Creative, 24 Hour Fitness) to find out more about Just Move: MSM: What was the inspiration behind the Just Move movement? LD: We are excited to provide opportunities for celebrating creative expressions and a chance to ‘restart’ your commitment to health and fitness in a community setting with like-minded individuals. Our monthly events offer this environment and a variety of special activities and experiences to give our members new ideas to refresh their workout commitments. MSM: How will the Zumba classes help jumpstart the idea of a healthy, everyday workout? LD: Zumba is such a great program–and one of its signatures is that it is easily tailored for your fitness goals, but always a good sweat and a good time. One of the main reasons to try a Zumba class is for community. Research shows that having a network and reference group that supports the change you desire and believes in you is one of the most critical factors to achieving your goals. We also really love that Zumba celebrates and provides a chance for creative expression–which is truly one of the keys to a long term commitment to a fitness routine and healthy and fit life. MSM: What are some other ways 24 Hour Fitness can integrate exercise into anyone’s hectic day? LD: We offer a wide variety of classes and workouts, different settings, along with content that can inspire and instruct you as you move forward on your path.  We just need you to come through the door of our club. Then, we can guide and work with you to find the solution “that moves you” to become the best version of you that you desire. MSM: Do you have any advice for those who find it hard to begin a weekly workout schedule? LD:  To your point above, the hard part is actually taking the first step.  However, it is easier if you really think of and dream of the bigger reason behind your goal.  Change is ignited from within, from a desire to experience a different version of your life.  From there, anything is possible, if you’re ready for the challenge.  Our goal is to give you a map, a supportive community and informed solutions that will entertain and educate you along your way. MSM: Is there anything else you’d like our readers to know about 24 Hour Fitness and Just Move? LD: Just Move is a signature event–one of many moments that happen every day at 24 Hour Fitness.  If you miss the event, don’t worry–pick a time that you CAN come to the club; grab a friend if you wish, and get in the door.  We will be ready to help you begin your fitness journey from there! So grab your favorite gym partner and head to the nearest 24 Hour Fitness to start your new daily routine with people who care and encourage a fit and friendly lifestyle for you! The Nordstrom Beauty Trend Show Amps Your Beauty Style

By Gisel Habibnejad On December 13th, a huge crowd gathered outside awaiting the doors to open at 8am for Nordstrom Merrick Park. Why would women across Miami wake up so early on a Saturday? The annual Nordstrom Beauty Trend Show, of course! Seats filled up quickly as everyone anxiously anticipated for the fashion show to begin. The beauty trend show opened with the lively and hilarious host, Nordstrom Beauty Director, Gilbert Vera. Soon after, beautiful models strutted down the runway with designer clothes ranging from Mara Hoffman, Clover Canyon, and Rebecca Taylor. These outfits centered on the Velvet Berry Lip beauty trend. The fall trend continues to grow in popularity as seen on celebrities such as Kylie Jenner, Emma Watson, and Jessica Alba. The most notable of colors was MAC’s Pro Lipstick in Sin ($16) as seen on the cover photo for the event. Geir Ness, creator of Laila perfume – the essence of Norway, also made a special appearance to speak about the unique scent and gift set ($99) and spritz the floral scent across the audience. For the next segment of the beauty show, models showed-off their night eye shadow shades. Makeup brands included Trish McEvoy and Lancôme. The crowd favorite was easily the 5-Colour Eyeshadow Palette ($60) by Dior. The collection includes 11 different color combination palettes to choose from, all containing soft shades allowing for an easy day-to-night transition. Also seen on the models was Yves Saint Laurent’s Fusion Ink Foundation SPF 18 ($60). The lightweight formula was voted #1 by nationwide magazines and can be considered as the “freedom foundation” as it is ideal to prevent that cakey-makeup look. The models were adorned with Diane von Furstenberg, Kate Spade, and Just Cavalli. The last fall beauty trend showcased was sparkling accents. The beautiful makeup looks were the picture-perfect pop of detail for the fabulous outfits sported by the models. Designer brands included Vince Camuto, Helmut Lang, and Philip Lim. The most attention-grabbing item of all was the My Burberry Eau de Parfum ($95) now sold at Nordstrom Merrick Park Burberry beauty counter. The beautiful bottle is tied with an iconic trench coat inspired bow around the top. After the fantastic beauty show, attendees enjoyed the rest of their day at the beauty counters receiving free makeovers from brands such as Christian Dior, Dolce & Gabbana, and Anastasia Beverly Hills – among the many others. Throughout the day, Nordstrom Beauty Stylists assisted event goers by handpicking the best makeup customized to their desired preferences. Beauty Stylist Juan Reyes shared his favorite brands and must-haves of the season. For cleansing and toning, his go-to product is La Prairie’s Cellular Cleansing Water for eyes and face ($90). With one wash, the product cleans all traces of makeup – without the use of water. In addition, you will immediately see improvement in your skin as you begin your path to anti-aging; healthy skin is always in-style. Juan also recommended the Tom Ford Perfume Sampler Collection sold only at Nordstrom Merrick Park. The sampler includes scents such as, Oud Wood and Jasmin Rouge for men and women, respectively. For all things beauty and fashion, it’s safe to say Nordstrom Merrick Park has the essentials to take care of every beauty need by all the best brands and stylists. Whole Foods Market Opens its Doors to Downtown Miami

By Nycole Sariol Downtowners, rejoice! That unrealistic New Year’s resolution you made about losing twenty pounds in three months may be realized after all! Whole Foods Market, the eponymous marketplace of all things fresh, is slated to open right off of Southeast Third Street in Downtown Miami on Wednesday, January 16th. To kick off the long-awaited inauguration befittingly, the market will host a bread breaking ceremony at 8:45 in the morning, whereby a downpour of customers will oscillate through the countless isles harboring only the freshest in natural and organic delights. The recent Downtown addition is one of four locations set to open this year and the twenty-second to open up in Florida. Exclusive Whole Foods offerings will include an in-house Sushi Maki and La Churrasqueria stations – to name a few – mirroring the schematic of other South Florida locations. Adding to the list of locally sourced produce and fresh seafood, this particular Whole Foods will be the first of its kind to open up a Jugofresh shop within its sliding doors. That’s right, health nuts – all whom fancy Chef Laszlo’s bottled concoctions can now get their juice fix on in store. No word on other Jugofresh and WFM collaborations to popping up. Parking will also be a luxury at the Downtown spot: an 140-spot garage will be designated exclusively for Whole Foods shoppers, and will be color-coated by local street artists. But here’s the real reason why you should camp outside of Whole Foods on the eve of the opening: the first five hundred customers in line will receive “mystery gift cards” of five, ten, or twenty dollars. One lucky customer will also receive the mother-load of gift cards at a value of five hundred dollars. And for anyone familiar with organic groceries and their merciless price points, that’s like hitting the jackpot!

Feast of The Imaginarium at Bâoli Miami: A Surrealist Dinner Party

By Nycole Sariol  Salvatore Dali may be long gone from the physical world. But on Wednesday, October 29th, his spirit was awoken from the grave to bewitch the indoor-outdoor quarters of South Beach hot spot, Bâoli, and celebrate its pre-Halloween soiree entitled Feast of the Imaginarium. The attire for the night was the very antithesis of cheesy get-ups, and guests were encouraged to “dress to test the limits of their imagination,” opting for intelligently crafted costumes. Sharp, suited men in black bunny masks courted cocktail waitresses clad in ethereal albeit short dresses and leaf headdresses riveting their sultry locks, while others seated, noshed on kitchen signatures like the Truffle Risotto and Robata Grilled Salmon Filet. The restaurant-lounge hybrid illustriously transformed into one of Dali’s surrealist paintings as smoke hovered low to the ground and old-fashioned umbrellas ceilinged the outdoor patio alit in a cool blue hue. Amid the banter of impeccably robed guests, entertainment came in all shapes and sizes: little people impersonating Dali paraded on the patio’s bar, where Flip, Bâoli’s finest acrobatic bartender, served up elixirs to celebrity faces, such as Scotty Pippin and Michael Bay. High-profile names, however, were dwarfed next to lofty stilt performers floating through the masses, and donning an eerie double-face mask. The premise of the night’s congregation of surrealist enthusiasts was to further bolster Miami’s knowledge of art and culture, but judging by the evening’s triumph and imaginative participation by its guests; no bolstering was needed. The Great British Garden Party

By Sherri Balefsky Photos courtesy of Vivacity On Friday evening, Miami’s finest congregated at the historic Biltmore Hotel in Coral Gables. The occasion? The Queen’s birthday. Yes, that Queen. Although her actual birthday is in late April and Her Majesty was not in attendance, guests spent the evening paying tribute to all things British. Hosted by the British Consulate-General of Miami, the GREAT British Garden Party was a way for local tastemakers to celebrate the best of the British creative sector that continues to amp up business in South Florida.    I had the pleasure of attending this invite-only event. I was greeted by three exquisite Bentleys—the quintessential British automobile. One was even painted in Union Jack designs. I was also able to spend a few moments inside the driver seat of a gorgeous black Bentley convertible. These shiny works of “art” set the tone for what was happening inside. After ogling the cars, I entered the Biltmore’s posh Country Club Ballroom, where I was given my Virgin Atlantic “ticket.” A ticket to all that Great Britain is known for—a red, white, and blue display, complete with a traditional bright-red London phone booth. Even the guests got into the theme and dressed their best in their chicest garden party attire. As a tribute to British style, many ladies donned colorful floral fascinators. Kevin McGurgan, Her Majesty’s Consul General in Florida, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands, kicked off the event with a few words to welcome guests. He then introduced the Mayor of Coral Gables, James Cason, who further applauded the unique partnership that has evolved between the British Embassy and the City of Coral Gables. He saluted the British businesses that continue to influence Miami in all industries from art to fashion to food. After the introductions, we were simply asked to enjoy! We drank tea, ate scones and other delicious pastries, and sipped on Bombay Sapphire. There was even a station set up so that guests could learn how to mix their own Bombay Sapphire cocktails. The highlight of the night was the interactive photo booth set up so that guests could take a picture with a Virgin Atlantic flight attendant with a backdrop that, once superimposed, made it seem that guests were actually mid-flight on a Virgin Atlantic airplane. All around, it was a bloody good time. Next stop—London!
